Des Moines Chiropractic Newsletter - May

Compass Chiropractic May, 2009 E-Newsletter

Thank you!

Thank you to all who helped Compass Chiropractic celebrate a great first year by attending our open house. The food went over well and everyone seemed to love the punch. Congratulations to Randy Pelham, who won the Wii and Wii Fit and plans to give it to his grandchildren!

At the event, I accidentally forgot to thank my parents who have been an amazing source of moral support as Compass Chiropractic has grown. Thanks Mom and Dad!

Thank you to all who donated money to JDRF. With your assistance, Compass Chiropractic raised $800 to go toward finding a cure for juvenile diabetes.

A Special Fundraiser – May 1 through July 31, 2009

In coordination with the upcoming State Summer Games May 21-23 in Ames, we’ll be doing a fundraiser for Special Olympics Iowa. During the fundraiser running from May 1 through July 31, any new patient who donates $50 or more to Special Olympics Iowa will receive a complementary first visit (exam and any needed spinal X-rays up to $300 value).

We raised over $1300 during this event last year! Our goal is to raise over $2,500 for Special Olympics Iowa this year.

More than 2,800 Special Olympics Iowa athletes are expected to compete in the annual State Summer Games on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. Athletes of all ages and ability will have the opportunity to participate in various sports and activities including: aquatics, track&field, bocce, cycling, developmental sports, soccer skills, 7-on-7 team soccer, and tennis. A roller skating competition will be held at Skate North in Des Moines this year as well. Over 1,200 coaches and chaperones as well as about 2,000 volunteers donate their time annually to make the Games a success. Visit www.soiowa.org for more information.

Introducing Calli!

Calli Professional Portrait

Name: Calli

Title: Chiropractic Assistant and Practice Representative

Background: I was raised in Southern Iowa in a small town. I have two older brothers and always enjoyed being the youngest and only girl. I attended Faith Baptist Bible College and received my Bachelor’s Degree. I married my high school sweetheart in the middle of my junior year of college, and now reside in Des Moines with my husband, Cory, and my dog, Walker.

Favorite Aspects of Working at Compass Chiropractic: There are many things I enjoy about working at Compass Chiropractic. I love learning about the job and getting to know everything that goes into chiropractic care. I especially enjoy getting to know each and every patient and learning new things about them.

What I enjoy outside of work: My favorite thing to do is spend time with my husband and family. I also enjoy going out with friends, traveling, going to the gym, motorcycle rides with my husband, music, and being involved at my church.

How I give back to the community: I donate my time and money when possible. I’ve helped through a variety of organizations including Alpha Women’s Center, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and my church.
Words to live by: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has enough worry of its own.”

Favorite local Restaurant: J. Benjamin’s

Something most patients don’t know about me: I began college as a Music Major and later switched my major, but I still love to sing and perform. I grew up in a musical family and play the piano, guitar and violin.

My experience with chiropractic: As far as chiropractic care is concerned, I have transitioned from a skeptic to a firm believer. I was experiencing back pain with tingling and numbness in my back, as well as pain and numbness down the outside of my legs. I had lived with this for a number of years, and decided it would just be a way of life for me. It affected a number of daily activities including washing dishes, doing laundry, sitting, standing, and countless others. After treatment with Dr. Krohse, which included Active Release Technique, the pain, tingling and numbness have significantly subsided in my back, and completely gone away in my legs. I will certainly never live without chiropractic care again.

Condition of the Month – Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by widespread pain in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Some other problems commonly linked with fibromyalgia include fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep problems, headaches, numbness in hands and feet, depression, and anxiety. Fibromyalgia can develop on its own, or secondary to other musculoskeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia requires a history of at least three months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in a least 11 of 18 tender-point sites. These tender-point sites include fibrous tissue or muscles of the Neck, Shoulders, Chest, Rib Cage, Lower Back, Thighs, Knees, Arms (elbows) and Buttocks. The overwhelming characteristic of fibromyalgia is long-standing, body-wide pain with defined tender points. Fibromyalgia pain can mimic the pain experienced by people with various types of arthritis. The soft-tissue pain of fibromyalgia is described as deep-aching, radiating, gnawing, shooting or burning, and ranges from mild to severe. Fibromyalgia sufferers tend to waken with body aches and stiffness.

Chiropractic care, Active Release Techniques, and specific exercises and stretches all can provide relief to patients suffering from fibromyalgia. If you feel someone you know may be dealing with this condition, send them to Dr. Krohse at Compass Chiropractic, where a very thorough initial exam will help to determine whether they are dealing with fibromyalgia or another condition and what treatments may be recommended.

A Highly Recommended Professional – Joel Akers

It’s not often you receive a recommendation for a professional from 1,900 miles away. When I told my insurance agent in Burlington, Washington that I’d be moving back to Iowa he shared that he knew the perfect person to send me to. Apparently he had met West Des Moines Insurance Agent Joel Akers recently at a seminar, and was very impressed with him.

After a single flight back to Iowa in September, 2007 to look at potential locations and meet with banks, I did most of the rest of planning of Compass Chiropractic from across the country. Everything had to come together at the same time and I remember finalizing my business insurance with Joel over the phone from an Active Release Techniques seminar in San Jose, California.
Though Joel got things done right and right away over the phone, the thing I’ve appreciated most about him is his thoroughness and desire to make sure that I understand my coverage and the need for different coverages. When I arrived in Des Moines, we scheduled a meeting for me to learn more about my policy. That meeting started a relationship that has been very beneficial for me and my business.

As I’ve added staff, Joel has been a great resource to make sure that I have all my bases covered. He set me up with a worker’s compensation plan, and when Calli started to do some practice representative work where she is driving for work, an email to Joel came back with a rapid response confirming that she is indeed covered should anything happen to her while driving for work.

I strongly recommend you talk with Joel about your personal and business insurance needs. I feel very confident that he’ll be able to customize a policy just for you. His contact information is below.

FAQ’s – Identity Theft

Q: My wife is a different person since her headaches started happening daily. What can we do?

A: We all know someone whose identity: "great parent," "loving spouse," "strong worker," or "forever-youthful athlete" has been stolen away and replaced with a new one: "headache sufferer," "low back pain victim," "carpal tunnel hostage," or "injured-shoulder drain on society." They have resigned themselves to their fate and feel no hope of having their original identity restored.

At Compass Chiropractic we fight identity theft daily. Patients are amazed when an incredibly thorough examination rapidly apprehends the causes of their condition. A plan is then formed to rapidly restore their health and identity with the most advanced non-surgical, non-drug, condition-resolving treatments available.

For dysfunctional joints (132 joints in the spine alone) which often cause back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sciatica (pain down the leg) specific hands-on or gentle, instrument-assisted adjustments are used to restore normal motion and joint function. Patented, highly-effective Active Release Techniques address scar tissue and nerve irritation which cause conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, hip pain, and knee pain. Problem-specific exercises and stretches address the muscular causes of ongoing low back pain and shoulder instability. Guaranteed semi-flexible custom orthotics address dysfunctional foot arches and resulting joint stress which cause foot, knee, hip, and low back pain.

We are thrilled to share that we frequently win the fight against identity theft. If you know someone whose identity has been stolen, please direct them to the identity theft experts at Compass Chiropractic, where a complimentary consultation is always available to learn more about our care options.

Condition of the Month – Shoulder Pain

Patients with shoulder pain report that it affects every area of their life. Activities like putting on clothes, lifting groceries, and giving a loved one a hug cannot be taken for granted anymore, as pain is felt with every movement. Athletes with shoulder pain are often faced with the options of quitting the passion of their life, or going through a higher risk surgical procedure with no guarantee of a return to full function.

At Compass Chiropractic, a thorough examination reveals the causes of shoulder pain and limited range of motion. A plan is formed to restore normal shoulder function and pain-free living. Highly effective treatments including specific adjustments and Active Release Techniques are used to address all the causes of the problem. It is so rewarding to hear stories of how our care has enabled patients to return to their normal, healthy lives.

Check the Shoulder Pain page of our website for more information.
