Naturally Frugal Health

Welcome to my post for Des Moines' Frugal Blog Tour. Read all the blogs on the tour for great frugal living information. As a chiropractor, I love adding value to my patients’ lives. That starts with giving them a plan to get back to pain-free living, but in the process I enjoy sharing ways to improve their life overall. In these conversations I often pick up tips and tricks for better living from my patients as well. Here are a few tips for improving your health naturally and frugally.

· Read 7 Steps for a Pain-Free Life by Robin McKenzie – If I could only share one book to improve the health of people’s spines, it would be this one. Pick it up from the library or buy it used on Amazon. It highlights how poor posture causes the majority of neck and back pain and teaches the most important stretches to counteract the poor postures of our lives. If you do these stretches on a regular basis, you will be standing up straight and pain-free for the rest of your life.

· Listen to Healthy Podcasts – Ben Greenfield Fitness and Dave Ramsey are amazing podcasts. Ben Greenfield is the country’s top trainer. He gives great information on improving your health. He discusses workout plans that are perfect for someone interested in home exercise on a dime. Recent discussions of TRX and Gymstick highlight ways that he spotlights home exercise tools that could be used to craft a very effective workout program without need for an expensive gym membership. On his website are a number of video clips highlighting proper exercise form. Further proof that he gives you workouts you can do on a dime: he recently released his plan for the Glee spinning workout, in which any episode of Glee can be transformed into an intense home or gym bicycling workout. Further, you could easily take the principles from that plan and apply it to the treadmill or elliptical trainer.

· Dave Ramsey is the ultimate frugal living podcast. He provides the motivation to get “gazelle intense” to get out of debt. I have also taken financial strategies from his show and applied them to my health. For instance, Dave Ramsey is an advocate of the envelope system for personal budgets, in which you fill an envelope with cash at the beginning of the month for each part of your budget and you only spend that amount during the month. Earlier this year, I noticed that my dietary habits were going downhill as I was frequently stopping for gas station snacks (Hot Tamales), icecream, or other fast food on my way home from work. In order to curb these bad habits, I implemented Dave Ramsey’s envelope system. I filled an envelope with $20 that was only to be used for fast food or gas station treats. It was effective at both improving my health and at helping my budget as I cut down significantly on unhealthy and expensive treats.

· Shop with a plan – I know that another blogger will be focusing more on frugal eating and shopping. However, one of my coworkers recently shared her shopping plan with me and it is so phenomenal I feel compelled to share it. She uses a spreadsheet with all the foods they frequently use organized by aisles of the store (the spreadsheet linked is for the Jordan Creek HyVee). This spreadsheet makes it simple to choose their favorite healthy and “treat” meals, see what’s needed to stock the kitchen, and then efficiently pick up the needed items. As a result, there is less wasted money and time. Shopping with a plan like this also helps to avoid the temptation purchases.

· Attend free workouts around Des Moines. If you know where to look, a number of free group workouts are available around Des Moines. A few of my favorites include:

o Iowa Outdoor Unlimited – subscribe to their yahoo newsgroup and you’ll see a number of free hikes and cross country skiing outings available this winter.

o IronWorks – Loran Storts from Ironworks offers weekly free group workouts guaranteed to kick your butt. His most popular offering right now is a Wednesday night circuit workout held at Sapphire Gymnastics in Urbandale. After meeting Loran, there's a good chance you'll be inspired to perform at a higher level in distance running or triathlon, in which case you can bring him on as your coach.

o Zoom Performance – Zoom offers a free group workout every Thursday evening. They also coach runners and triathletes.

o Capital Striders – Capital Striders running group has a group run taking off Saturday mornings from Drake. I’ve also enjoyed their Beginner’s Running Group which takes off every week from Campbell Park in Clive on Monday’s at 6. A small group of hardcore runners will continue to run weekly throughout the winter.

o Yoga in the Park – although not available now, Yoga in the Park was a great success with many taking advantage of free yoga by excellent local instructors. Look for it next spring.

Taking advantage of these suggestions will greatly improve your health. Thanks for reading and please contact me if you have any questions!

Thanks to the members of our Race for the Cure Team!

On Saturday, October 23, 18 people joined Team Compass Chiropractic to race for a cure for breast cancer. We had a great time and look forward to putting together a team again next year.

Connie recommends Getting Organized at the Grocery Store

Everyone knows a great way to save time and money at the grocery store is to prepare a list before leaving home. So often if you don't, you end up buying a lot of things you don't need and come home with nothing to make for meals. My husband Tony has developed a grocery list that is very efficient. It takes a little time at the beginning to put it together but it saves you a great amount of time after that.

What works for us is to write a list by what we always use in our home and organize the list by aisles at our favorite Hy-Vee store. If nothing is circled on the list for that aisle then I can skip that one all together. At the bottom of the list we have the meals that we prepare on a regular basis.

Each week I print out the grocery list and decide on what meals sound good, then circle the ingredients on the list. After that I go through and circle all the things I regularly use by checking our supply at home of what we have left. It is very rare that we miss anything since I can check my list and then check my stock of that specific item to see if I need to purchase more.

This has worked great in our home, it keeps me focused when I am at the grocery store and don’t usually get too many unnecessary items. A little extra time at the grocery store to develop this list and the rest of it is a wonderful time and money saver for a busy family.

View Connie and Tony’s list here and use it to create your own!

Abbey recommends Glee

When I was in school last year there was always such hype about the musical show on FOX called Glee. I worked on the nights that it aired so I was never able to watch it and didn’t understand everyone’s obsession over it. This past weekend I was able to watch a few shows from the first season and now I’m hooked. I’m not just hooked on the show, but also on the music, as I have to admit I have a glee CD in my car and I sing along loudly everywhere I go and it makes me want to make life a musical. The show, although sometimes cheesy, the characters play their roles so well and the music is fantastic. Before watching Glee I have always loved going to musicals, so this show is right up my alley. So if you like musicals and a fun "pick-me-up" I recommend this show, which is on Tuesday nights on FOX.

Hear the most popular Glee song here!

Dr. Krohse recommends Groupon

Do you love to try local restaurants and stores around the Central Iowa area? Do you love amazingly good deals? If you enjoy both of these, I recommend you subscribe to Des Moines Groupon. You’ll receive an email each day with a fantastic offer to a local or occasionally web-based or national business. The concept of Groupon is that you only get the deal if a certain number of people purchase it. If you see a deal you really want, you need to share about it with your friends. Since its recent debut in Des Moines, I’ve enjoyed checking out the daily deals.

A Local Business – Phillips’ Abbey Carpet & Floor

Through my BNI chapter, I have learned a great deal about Phillips’ Floors. I feel very confident recommending anyone needing residential or commercial floors to Mark Bjork. He’ll take great care of you personally or refer you to the best person to do the job within Phillips’ Floors great team. Mark’s number is 515-202-1355.

Condition of the Month – Kids and Chiropractic

The top three conditions that adults visit chiropractors for are back pain, neck pain, and headaches. However, many parents are surprised to learn that the reasons children visit a chiropractor are quite different.

If your child or the child of someone you know is suffering from these conditions, consider giving safe and effective chiropractic care a chance before trying higher risk drugs and surgery.

Would you like your child to be examined to see if there are any problems. Take advantage of an upcoming Kid's Day – the first Tuesday of each month. On this day children under 13 receive any needed services at no charge!

Top Reasons Kids Visit a Chiropractor:

1. 11.3% of visits - Earache
2. 10.6% Neck Pain
3. 10.3% Check-up
4. 8.8% Headache
5. 7.1% Upper Resp. Infection
6. 6.3% Low Back Pain
7. 4.5% Allergies
8. 3.3% Asthma
9. 3.3% Bedwetting
10. 3.2% Upper Back Pain
11. Chronic Constipation

Dr. David Krohse of Compass Chiropractic completed his Pediatrics Practise training in June of 2010. To see if chiropractic may be able to help your family call (515) (309-1217) to schedule a first visit or complimentary consultation.

Connie recommends the Chiroflow Premium Waterbase Pillow

I have a feather pillow that I have been using for a couple of years. I was not happy with it because it got flat in the middle of the night and I would wake up and had to “refluff” it. When Dr Krohse started carrying the water pillow at our office I decided to give it a try. I loved it from the first night I tried it. It is firm but soft and since I am a side sleeper the majority of the time it was a perfect fit for me. It adapts to all different sleeping positions with the top part of the pillow fiber filled and the bottom part of the pillow filled with a thin layer of water.

I wasn’t sure how much water to put in it but it does come with detailed instruction and a funnel to fill the pillow. I started out with 80 oz of water, which is considered soft support. I slept on it a couple of nights and decided I wanted to add a little more water so added 20 more oz. for a total of 100 oz. and that is perfect for me.

If you are not happy with your current pillow give the waterbase pillow a try; it sure has helped me have a great night sleep.

Abbey recommends Barefoot Running & Vibram FiveFingers

For years I have not been much of a runner, as I spent much of my time swimming. During my off seasons I would try to run as a form of cross training, but I always seemed to have pain in either my feet or knees. On a run with my team in 2009 I starting to have really bad knee pain and I have not been able to run more than four miles since because the pain becomes too uncomfortable. Since I have been done swimming, I have found that not being able to run as far as I want has become extremely frustrating and I have been looking for any way to help decrease my knee pain. Connie’s husband, Tony, had the answer!

About a month ago I purchased Vibram FiveFinger shoes after they were recommended by Tony. They are a shoe that is designed to restore your natural running style, and have five different toe slots just like toe socks and are designed to be light weight. As I have been running in the FiveFingers I have found that my knee does not even have the dull ache that I usually have with regular running shoes. Additionally, I have noticed that I am running more fore-footed than heel to toe which I think has helped tremendously.

While I highly recommend trying these shoes, it is important that you follow the recommendations of gradually working your way into wearing them all the time. Our feet are used to having the padding in the back of our running shoe, and if you don’t work into it your calves and feet will become very sore. Stretching before running in the FiveFingers is also extremely important.

So if you are running in pain and are tired of it, definitely check out barefoot running. I did, and it has completely changed my attitude and desire to run!

(Dr. Krohse took Abbey's advice and bought the pair above last week)

Dr. Krohse recommends Momentum Magazine

Momentum has definitely been the best addition to Iowa’s endurance athletics scene in 2010. Make sure to pick up your copy each month at the front of area stores and health clubs. Like it on Facebook, support the sponsors, and get out there and get active. Momentum puts the spotlight on so many amazing events. Thanks go to Dave and Dee Mable for putting this great magazine together and to Big Green Umbrella for getting it out there!

Condition of the Month – Poor Posture Problems as Demonstrated in the Bowling Ball Contest

Hold a bowling ball close to your body, and it would be no problem to keep it there a while. However, hold it straight out in front of you and you’d feel an exponential increase in the effort required to hold the ball up! The bowling ball contest rapidly demonstrates this.

Similar to a bowling ball, your head weighs about 8-12 pounds. With proper posture it would be balanced directly above your shoulders. Muscles on the back of the neck are responsible for keeping the head from falling forward. Prior to computers, couches, driving, and factory work this was a light-duty job for these muscles. However, it is very common for people today to spend many hours a day in a poor posture position with the head out in front of the shoulders. Over time, this stresses muscles on the neck leading to pain and dysfunction. Further, it can lead to permanent changes in the neck and upper back and cause ongoing neck pain, upper back pain, and headaches.

Additionally, one needs to consider the spinal joints to fully understand why poor posture can be so detrimental. There are 132 joints in the spine and they are located on the back of the spine. When a person assumes the computer posture, the neck is extended back almost as much as possible. Consider what your neck would feel like if you spent an entire day painting a ceiling while looking straight up. This is a more extreme example of what happens when you spend extended time in the computer posture. Spinal joints are compressed backward. This stress adds up and can cause these joints to become dysfunctional and painful. Additionally, the inflammation in the area can affect the nerves exiting the spine leading to problems such as shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and headaches.

Please take a lesson from the bowling ball contest and follow the step by step instructions on the last page of this PDF to improve your situation.

The Carnation Experiment #2

The first Carnation Experiment was interesting and educational. We had requests to do another experiment and gladly obliged. View the results below!

One Week

One Week - Coffee vs. Water

One Week - Bud Light vs. Water

Nine Days

12 days

Two Weeks

Observations: Bud Light was neck and neck with water for the healthiest carnation. Kirkland brand water from Costco may be significantly better than Ice Mountain. The Kirkland water carnation in the first experiment still looked decent at 3 weeks while the Ice Mountain carnation tanked after two weeks.

Connie recommends Cincinnati Chili

My husband Tony was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and we just recently took a quick trip back to visit family and to eat at the Skyline Chili restaurant to devour Cincinnati Chili. It is my husband’s favorite restaurant and he has to eat there every day that we are in Cincinnati. I enjoy it too, but not like Tony does. He has one focus when he goes home: get to Skyline every day and twice a day would even be better.

Cincinnati Chili is unique because the secret ingredients are unknown but it is an old Greek recipe. It is a chili meat sauce with a very distinct flavor; I can taste cinnamon in it and maybe a hint of chocolate. The chili meat sauce is served over spaghetti noodles or hotdogs with a huge pile of cheese, a few diced onions and a side order of oyster crackers to sprinkle on top if you desire.

Since we don’t get home to Cincinnati very often, Tony has perfected the recipe with chili mix packets he purchases over the internet. He could never make it from scratch because he has no clue what the spices are that gives it that unique taste. If you are ever driving through the Cincinnati area, check out one of the many restaurants that serve Cincinnati Chili. Better yet, now that the weather is getting cooler try making Cincinnati Chili at home. The smell is incredible when it is simmering and you will be enjoying a meal full of flavor that will satisfy everyone in your family.

Abbey recommends Mickey’s Irish Pub - Great food and great service!

When I moved to Waukee in late May I was unfamiliar with the area as a whole, from what streets to take to what restaurants were popular. The day that I moved into my apartment we went to Mickey’s Irish Pub because it was conveniently located close to our apartment. This being the first time to the pub we were not sure how good the food would be, but we were surprised to discover that the entire experience was great and it has been a place that we now frequently go to. When you walk in you are greeted and then almost always seated immediately. While you are waiting for your food you can munch on free peanuts that they keep in a barrel next to the tables. Then when your food comes everyone is silent because it’s just that yummy. My personal favorite is the Paco Pork Sandwich with their delicious side of kettle chips. While that is my favorite and I usually always order it, they have a huge variety of dishes to choose from. Also, if you like karaoke they have it every weekend starting at 9:00 pm. If you want a new restaurant to try definitely try Mickey’s Irish Pub! It has great food, great service, and a great atmosphere!

Dr. Krohse Recommends “Daily Tooth Brushing”

It would be pretty silly to write an article on strategies to include tooth brushing into your day! We just do it. Yet, teeth are one of the most easily replaceable parts of your body. Your spine, on the other hand, has no replacement, and surgeries to fix problems in it are considered a last resort with considerable risks. Spinal disorders are the number one cause of disability in people over age 50! The average lifespan is currently over 75 years old. Consider the prospect of a long life in a wheelchair or with chronic pain and start performing the equivalents of tooth-brushing for the spine and body. Read these simple and time-efficient strategies to maintain your spine and knees.

Strategies below are general recommendations and do not take into account your personal health. Please consult our office to schedule an appointment where we’ll evaluate whether these exercises are appropriate for you and schedule a rehab session to make sure you are doing these exercises properly for maximum benefit.

Neck “Tooth Brushing Strategies”

Our bodies are designed to stand upright, but we spend the majority of our time bent forward in flexion. This leads to postural changes, neck muscular strain, and joint dysfunction in the neck. Robin McKenzie’s exercises recommended in “Treat Your Own Neck” can easily be implemented as described below to counteract the negative effects of too much time seated at desks, on couches, and in cars. Pick up the book in our office ($10) or online.

McKenzie Neck Exercises

• Perform 5-10 head retractions every time you go for a drive.
• Perform 10 head retraction/neck extension and rotation combinations while you let conditioner maintain your hair’s health in the shower.
• Sit with good posture; use a McKenzie Lumbar Roll (also available at Compass Chiropractic)

Low Back “Tooth Brushing Strategies”

Muscular imbalances in between the hips and low back and a lack of “core stability” lead to most cases of chronic dysfunction and low back pain which can lead to surgeries and disability. Address the most common muscular imbalance by diligently doing McKenzie lumbar extensions as described in “Treat Your Own Back”. Address core stability by sitting with good posture on an exercise ball or “Balance Disc” (Burst-resistant balls and inflatable balance discs are $30 at our office)

McKenzie Lumbar Extensions

• Perform 10 lying extensions while reading the paper or watching the morning show in the morning and another set in the evening.
• Perform 10 standing extensions each time you use the restroom.

Stability exercises

• Sit on an exercise ball at work (focus on sitting upright or you’ll lose the benefit)
• Purchase a Balance Disc to sit on at work ($30 at our office)
• Watch TV shows in the evening on an exercise ball

Knee “Tooth Brushing Strategies”

Knee problems severely limit mobility. Single leg squats are considered the best exercise to improve the stability of your knees. If you have already had any knee problems or consider your knees important, begin to do these exercises daily.

• Perform single leg squats while brushing and flossing your teeth in the morning and evening
• Increase the challenge by closing your eyes while doing the squats or stand on a pillow or balance disc

Winning Without Wheat

It seems like heresy to ban pasta from endurance athletes’ diet but the proof is in the pudding.

Condition of the Month – Neck Pain

Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care. While the neck itself can be very painful, structures in the neck can also cause pain up into the head or down into the upper back, shoulders, and arms.
Whiplash injuries are especially likely to negatively affect the neck. Many times people assume that the soreness, pain, and tightness of a slower speed fender bender will go away soon. However, the collision can alter the function of the neck and lead to worse problems over time as the body tries to stabilize the injured areas.

Patients often comment that the examination performed by Dr. David Krohse is the most thorough they’ve ever received. A thorough exam enables him to determine the exact problem areas of your spine and form a plan of care to restore normal function in your neck. The goal of the plan will be long term neck stability. Hands-on or gentle, instrument-assisted spinal adjustments will be used to restore function to injured joints while Active Release Techniques problem-focused soft-tissue treatments will address dysfunctional muscles. Other therapies such as electric stimulation and ultrasound may round out your treatment to provide complete healing while exercises and stretches will enable you to maintain the progress you make through care.

Call Compass Chiropractic today to reserve time for a first visit or free consultation.
