Condition of the Month – Back Pain

The majority of back pain patients have not experienced any trauma, accidents or major injuries prior to the onset of their problem. The cause of most back pain is the cumulative affect of improper sitting posture, poor work habits, incorrect lifting, lack of proper exercise and other lifestyle-related factors. All of these factors cause stress and imbalances on the spine and eventually pain. This is why people often injure their back by just bending over to pick up a piece of paper. The spine was already compromised and just the simple act of bending was enough to set off the problem. When this occurs, the surrounding back muscles go into spasm to protect the stressed or injured tissues of the back. In the US, low back pain is one of the most common conditions and one of the leading causes of physician visits. In fact, at least four out of five adults will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. Thirty-one million Americans have low back pain at any given time. One half of all working Americans admit to having back symptoms each year. One third of all Americans over age 18 had a back problem in the past five years severe enough for them to seek professional help. And the cost of this care is estimated to be a staggering $50 Billion yearly--and that's just for the more easily identified costs!

Consumer Reports has found chiropractic care to be the most effective treatment for low back pain. Additionally, we provide our patients with the second and third most effective treatments – massage in the form of Active Release Techniques and physiotherapy/rehab exercises. To see if our care may be able to help you, call us today and schedule a new patient visit or complimentary consultation.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

I had been to chiropractors before with so-so results, but when my low-back pain landed me in urgent care, I decided to look again. (Muscle relaxers are not my idea of a solution.) As a cycling instructor and kickboxer, I don't like to sit still. I found Dr. Krohse from an online search. His testimonials sounded promising, and as an athlete himself, I thought he would understand my need to keep moving. After an extremely thorough exam, Dr. Krohse began to treat and greatly reduce my low-back pain. Not only that, but he also used the active release technique to decrease my migraines and knee pain. I'm back to kickboxing and teaching cycling class pain-free! I've recommended Dr. Krohse to many friends. He produces positive results, and he's a great guy.

A Recipe – Fiesta Lime Chicken with Pico de Gallo and Brown Rice

While doing the Standard Process Cleanse I discovered many food items that I would not have otherwise chosen. The strict regimen of the cleanse forces you to be creative with your food choices to avoid eating the same foods all the time. The following recipe I put together while on the cleanse and my husband liked it so much we still have it every so often. It's fast, easy and very healthy!

Ingredients:

NOTE: Recipe is designed for one and can be doubled, tripled, etc. to accomodate more people

1 boneless skinless natural chicken breast

1 lime halfed

1 medium tomato (finely diced)

1/4 (scant) cup finely diced yellow or white onion

1-2 ts. chopped cilantro

1/4 ts. chopped garlic

natural sea salt

Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime seasoning

1/2 c. cooked brown rice (I use Steamfresh Brown Rice from the freezer section)

Preheat oven to 415 degrees. Lightly spray a medium air bake pan with cooking spray to avoid sticking. Place chicken on pan and sprinkle a small amount of sea salt (optional) on the chicken followed by the desired amount of Mrs. Dash seasoning. Do this to both sides. Place in the oven and bake for 18-20 minutes. While chicken is baking, combine the diced tomato, diced onion, cilantro, and garlic in a medium sized bowl. Add sea salt and lime juice to taste. To add flavor to the brown rice add desired amount of cilantro and lime juice. Place baked chicken on a plate and top with pico de gallo. Serve brown rice on the side.

A Market and Restaurant – Gateway Market

Gateway Market in the Village of Ponderosa is a grocery and eating establishment that often gets overlooked. It is located at the corner of Village View Dr. and Market Street, which is just off of 60th north of Mills Civic Parkway. Gateway offers a variety of high quality, unique merchandise. They have an extensive wine department and experts in both wine and cheese to help you pick pairings that will impress. The cafe, which is connected to the market, has a menu that includes everything from sandwiches, salads, homemade soups, firebrick oven pizza, smoothies, espresso, desserts and beyond. They also offer catering services for large and small gatherings, and with top quality chef's planning the menu almost no request is out of reach. So, although it may be a little off the beaten path, consider Gateway Market the next time you're planning an event, need top quality or difficult to find products, want a bouquet for a loved one, need help selecting a wine and cheese pairing, or are just interested in a tasty lunch or dinner. You are sure to be thrilled with both service and merchandise.

One Link and Three Businesses

This howstuffworks.com article highlights a few of the home repairs you shouldn’t tackle yourself. Fortunately, three of these more difficult repair needs are covered by members of my BNI (Business Network International) Chapter. I meet with this group on a weekly basis and when possible we help to spread the word about each other’s businesses. The nice thing about being a member of this group is that I’ve gotten to hear many positive reports on these three member’s services and am able to confidently recommend them to patients and friends of Compass Chiropractic. If you have any questions about these businesses please contact me or the contact person listed.

Standard Process Purification - One Month Update

Since ending the Standard Process Purification program, I let loose a couple times... both ended up being at social pizza parties. Other than that I've been following the program plan pretty closely with a couple exceptions. I've been having some low fat cottage cheese and milk. I have still not cheated by eating any significant sweets or fast food! I'm amazed by myself.

The results? I'm down 18 pounds total in one month since starting this program. I have just a few to go to get to where I want to be. Very excited but starting to have problems finding clothes that fit me. I must have taken some of my thin clothes to Goodwill during my chubby period.
