The Carnation Experiment

As we focus on how nutrition affects your health this month, we’ll be doing an experiment to see how a diet consisting of popular drinks affects the health of these white carnations. Stop by our office to see how they’re doing or follow Dr. Krohse on twitter at twitter.com/davidkrohse to see picture updates.

The Standard Process Purification Program

I decided to take the big step and do a purification program. I have never tried anything like this before and I have been eating poorly lately so wanted to see how much better I could feel and of course lose some weight in the process.

The purification program is 21 days and consists of supplements and also a powder to put into a fruit or vegetable shake every day. You can have only vegetables and fruit for the first 10 days and then you can add chicken or fish. I felt great from the very beginning, I slept better, my stomach was calm and I had great energy. You don’t have to be hungry on this program because you can eat all the vegetables you want. You do have to eat at least twice as many vegetables as fruit. I tried different recipes to add variety to the program and really enjoyed experimenting with different fruits and vegetables I have never tried before.

The weight fell off very fast at first and I lost a total of 12 lbs. all together. My goal was 15 lbs. so I am going to keep going with eating right until I reach it. This program is a great jump start to a lifetime of great nutrition.

If you are interested in giving this program a try, Compass Chiropractic is running a special for the month of July. Give us a call @ 515-309-1217 to set one aside for you or stop in for more information. Check out their website at www.standardprocess.com to learn more.

A recipe: Super Yummy Chocolate Caramel Cake

Anything is good in moderation, and you will love this!

This month I decided to share a super yummy cake recipe that doesn’t take much time out of your schedule. If you are a chocolate and caramel lover then this is the cake for you!

Ingredients:

1 box of devil’s food cake mix

1 small can of sweetened condensed milk

1 jar of caramel--ice cream topper

1 container of cool whip

Directions:

Bake the boxed cake mix as normal and let it cool. Once cooled take a straw and poke holes throughout the cake (The more the holes the more moist the cake will be). Then pour the jar of caramel over the cake, making sure to get some into the holes. You can heat the caramel if you wish. The next step is to pour the small can of condensed milk onto the cake and follow it by the topping the cake with a layer of cool whip. The last step: enjoy!

A recipe: Fun Layered Jello Dessert

This recipe is really fun, and it works great for families and get-togethers!

Get two small packages (3 oz.) of each flavor of jello and one container of corresponding flavored yogurt.

Example: Take one package of lime jello and make according to package directions. Add lime yogurt. Pour into a cake pan. Let sit for 45 minutes. Meanwhile make second package of lime jello and let cool. After first layer has set, pour second batch of plain lime jello onto first layer (use a spoon to deflect liquid so it doesn't make a hole in the first layer). Let set. Continue with other flavors.

A Local Business: CertaPro Painters

I have gotten to know Steven Weiland, the owner of CertaPro Painters through the BNI chapter that I am a member of. Through our weekly meetings, I have been able to hear a lot of positive feedback about CertaPro from other contractors within the group who have referred clients to Steven and the CertaPro team. Knowing Steven’s character and pride in his team and business reputation, I feel very confident recommending CertaPro to our patients and friends for any interior, exterior, or commercial painting needs. Call them at 515-255-9717 to schedule a free estimate.

Condition of the Month – Nutrition & Weight Management

The Standard Process Purification Program has enabled staff members and patients of Compass Chiropractic to get their nutrition on the right track. This 21 day process has generally resulted in people losing eight to nine percent of their body weight with most of the almost 20 people who have purchased it at Compass Chiropractic reporting 14-18 pounds lost during the program. Along with the excitement of that rapid change, people have reported increased energy, improved digestion, decreased allergies, and other positive changes. Most importantly, this program allows you to eat an unlimited variety of vegetables and fruit, with the stipulation that you need to keep them in a 2:1 ratio. Because of this, many have been able to successfully transition into a healthier lifestyle and make the long term changes needed for continued successful maintenance of a healthy weight and body shape.

Dr. David Krohse at Compass Chiropractic is a great example of how this program can work. Though remaining active and participating in both the Hy-Vee Triathlon and the Des Moines Half Marathon in 2009, his weight on New Years Eve, 2009 put him at a BMI of 27.3: well into the overweight range. He started the program on January 2 and lost 15 pounds in 21 days. Over the next three weeks he lost another 10 pounds through continued better nutrition. He then maintained the 25 pounds of loss fairly well through mid June, when he began the program a second time. By the beginning of July, Dr. Krohse reached 37 pounds lost and now has a BMI of 21.6, in the middle of the normal range. He reports higher energy, decreased allergies, and is running the fastest times of his life. Read Dr. Krohse’s blogs on his experience at his blog.

During the month of July, we have reduced the cost of the Standard Process Purification Program by $50 to $173 + tax.

Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete Marina McCollom

Sport: Tennis

Day Job: Director of Junior Tennis at 7 Flags Fitness & Raquet Club

Background: I am a professional tennis player competing on the USPTA national circuit for tennis teaching professionals. I am currently ranked #1 in singles in the Women’s Open division. In the last couple of years I have won 9 out of the 10 national tournaments I entered, including the National Indoor Championships in Minneapolis, National Clay Court Championships in West Palm Beach, FL, International Championships in Palm Springs, CA and Marco Island, FL, and Hard Court Championships in Tyler, TX. I have also won the Player of the Year award for Women’s Open division under the USPTA in 2008 and 2009.

Future Goals: My future goals include competing on the WTA tour (the most prestigious women’s tennis organization) and earning a world ranking and recognition.

Experience at Compass Chiropractic: Before starting care with Dr. Krohse I hadn’t tried chiropractic care. I was surprised how simple adjustments can positively affect your overall physical condition. I have had a chronic lower back pain for about a year. After starting treatment at Compass Chiropractic I haven’t experienced any major problems in that area.

Dr. Krohse was friendly and professional. He took the time to develop a personal program for me so I can strengthen my body and prevent future problems. I feel that I have improved my flexibility and strengthened my core, which is very important to tennis players.

I would definitely recommend Compass Chiropractic to other athletes. Dr. Krohse is very knowledgeable and, as an athlete himself, understands the importance of ultimate physical condition to outstanding performance.

Standard Process Purification Round Two

On June 14 after completing the Hy-Vee Triathlon I decided to do the Standard Process Purification for a second time. I weighed in heavier than expected at 154 pounds (my mom was down the week before and we did enjoy a week of dining out). The second time through I found some parts of the program easier and some harder and learned some more tips and tricks along the way.

Tips:

Pickles - Though perhaps not totally approved from a purification perspective, pickles seem to be ok from the weight loss perspective and I enjoyed them as an afternoon or evening salty snack where in my normal life I might be tempted to have some chips and salsa.

Lentil Soup - Who would think a person could be so excited about lentil soup. I was having trouble finding enough time to have enough for lunch to feel full through the afternoon. The lentil soup was filling and kept me full through the afternoon.

Sun-dried Tomatoes - Costco has some of these with spices and olive oil. They made some pretty fantastic salads but I had to make sure not to go overboard.

Grilling - Grilling can help make the purification more tolerable. I had a friend over and served grilled salmon, grilled pineapple rounds, stir-fried Birdseye vegetables, and brown rice and she loved it. With the right attitude and some creativity eating healthy doesn't have to be boring.

Though overall the purification was easier, it was harder to be good during icecream season. I definitely love icecream. The rest of my purification posts are linked below along with some pictures from my second purification.

Results: At the end of the purification I reached 138 or 139 pounds... definitely the lightest I've been since highschool. I am pleased with how it went and am glad I did it again. Now I'm looking forward to seeing the trimming of the fat help me run faster in the Okoboji Half Marathon on July 17.
