Des Moines Chiropractic Newsletter

Compass Chiropractic August, 2010 E-Newsletter

A Special Fundraiser

Through September 30, any new patient who donates $50 or more to Special Olympics Iowa will receive a complementary first visit (exam and any needed spinal X-rays up to $300 value).

Call (515) 309-1217 to schedule an appointment!

The Carnation Experiment

The Carnation Experiment definitely highlighted how what we drink can affect our health. View the pictures below to see what our initially healthy carnations experienced with their liquid diets.

One Week

One Week - Water vs. Diet Coke

Two Weeks

Three Weeks

Water vs. Diet Coke at three weeks - moldy stem!

The experiment was so much fun we’ve decided to do a second experiment in August with a new set of drinks. You'll have to stop by our office to find out what the carnations are living and dying with this time.

A Weekend in Okoboji

One of my favorite places to visit for a weekend in the summer is Lake Okoboji in western Iowa. It has been a place that I have gone to since I was a child. Our whole family tries to go there as often as we can and hit all our favorite beaches, restaurants, and specialty shops.

We usually like to camp when we go there and stay at one of the Iowa state parks, either Emerson Bay or Gull Point. They both have their own beach and fairly clean bathrooms. If you stay there don’t expect water or a level paved site but you do get electricity and some grass to relax on.

As soon as we get set up, our first stop is usually the Mrs. Ladys mexican restaurant. Always go there with a big appetite because their portions are gigantic. I always order a mini insane taco - it is so incredibly good and filling. It is a thick chewy crust stuffed with meat, tomato, black olives, lettuce and lots of cheese. Of course save room for dessert as they have warm sopapilla and you can mix maple syrup and cinnamon for dipping. My mouth is watering just writing about it…..

After a big hearty meal, we head down the street to Arnolds Park where they have fun specialty shops where you can find a warm, cozy Okoboji sweatshirt or a fun summer dress. My requirement is to stop at the Black Walnut Candy Shop and get a homemade salted nut roll. They have a variety of different kinds, anything from being covered with peanuts, cashews or new this year is a chocolate dipped one with sprinkles. I always get the peanut covered one and savor every bite.

Another required stop for me is The Barefoot Bar. It is like being in the Caribbean, lots of palm trees and tiki huts and it is right on the water. They have huge docks to park your boat at so you can enjoy some time on the water and when you get thirsty or hungry, stop on in and take pleasure from the atmosphere. They usually have a live band on the weekend starting in the early afternoon and a great clothing shop with fun clothes.

The weekend always goes way too fast. Whenever I drive away I am looking forward to our next time there and always have great memories to take home with me.

Swimming

I started swimming at 5 years old, and this past March I finished up my 17 year competitive career. As I have incorporated different types of exercise into my daily workouts, I have grown to really appreciate what swimming can do for the body. Probably the best thing about swimming is that it is not a contact sport. When in the water you are light weight and therefore do not experience the pounding and stress on the body as with land sports. Another benefit is that swimming is simply a great form of exercise for the body. It is one of the only sports that works almost all the muscles of the body. It helps build endurance, cardiovascular strength, and pulmonary efficiency making it a great cross-training sport. The third benefit is that swimming is a life-long sport. Whether a person is 5 or 80+ years old, swimming is always an option. Although I am no longer competing, I will continue to swim recreationally because all of the wonderful things it can do. It’s relaxing, beneficial, and fun, so give it a try!

The Book of Eli

I just watched a great movie which I recommend you to see. It is
called "The Book of Eli." It has Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in
it. The movie is thrown into a time after a nuclear bomb went off.
Denzel has a goal to deliver something, but many people stand in his
path wanting to stop him, including Gary Oldman. It is rated R. It
has parts that are gory, suspense, a lot of cussing, but a GREAT
ending which surprises you. It makes you realize how precious things
are, and how we as a society take advantage of them. I hope you watch
it!

Dr. Krohse Recommends:

Two Podcasts

Ben Greenfield Fitness

On an Ironman triathlete patient’s recommendation, I recently started listening to this stellar podcast. Though geared slightly toward triathlon and endurance athletes, any person aspiring to live a more healthy and active life will learn so much about how to get the most benefit out of their workouts and nutrition as well as how to train and recover from injuries. I strongly recommend you check out Ben Greenfield Fitness!

The Dave Ramsey Show

I’ve been listening to Dave Ramsey’s podcasts on a regular basis for a couple years now. They are truly entertaining, inspiring, and educational. Dave teaches his listeners that reaching financial success is more similar to weight loss than to corporate finance in the way that most of us have the knowledge of how to be financially free (and thin) but often lack the self control to reach our goals. Dave teaches the “Baby Steps” that enable listeners to align their actions with their knowledge and become “gazelle intense” to reach their financial goals. Along with callers asking questions and receiving great financial advice, every day listeners call in to the show and share stories of how they “became sick and tired of being sick and tired” and cleaned up thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt in 24-36 months through Dave’s simple plan. Dave can also be listened to on KWKY 1150 AM from 2-4 weekdays. His book “The Total Money Makeover” would also be a great place to start if you don’t podcast.

Condition of the Month – Chiropractic Skepticism

We frequently see new patients come in who share “I don’t believe in chiropractic” only to find themselves feeling so much better a short time later with quality chiropractic care. While I'm always happy to explain how chiropractic works in person through models and charts, through this email I'll simply share the facts below for the skeptics reading.

Consumer Reports found that back pain sufferers rated chiropractors and chiropractic adjustments as the most effective
• Medicare and Medicaid cover chiropractic care - your government has found chiropractic to be effective and cost effective
• All major insurances cover chiropractic care
• You have 132 joints in your spine! If one of them is not moving right, chiropractic adjustments help restore them to normal motion

Chiropractic care works by restoring dysfunctional joints in the spine to normal motion, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. Dr. Krohse’s other specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, loosens and relaxes problem muscles that can cause a variety of problems. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to stabilize their spine. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.

Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete Cam Kirkpatrick

Sport: Mountain Biking

Other Sponsors/Affiliations: Rasmussen Bike Shop, Orbea, Oakley

Day Job: Senior Civil/Structural Engineer for Chicago Bridge & Iron, Inc.

"I’ve been racing mountain bikes for the past 12 years, and over the past 6 or 7 years I began to notice a gradual increase in lower back discomfort that eventually transitioned into sometimes unbearable pain. I would finish a race, dismount my bike and it would take me about 5 minutes to stand up straight. I had pretty much accepted the back pain as a part of getting older and figured that it would be something that I was going to have to deal with as long as I kept riding and racing.

I chose to seek treatment from Dr. Krohse based on recommendations from a few friends and also because Dr. Krohse actively participates in a lot of the same cycling activities that I do. His intimate understanding of the demands on the human body from competitive cycling have proven to be invaluable. After two weeks of bi-weekly treatments, I began to notice a remarkable change in how my lower back felt during and after races. The unbearable pain began to transition back to minor discomfort to a point where I had a relatively pain free race 3 weeks after seeing Dr. Krohse. I plan to continue chiropractic treatment with Dr. Krohse as a regular part of my training regime.

If you’re considering chiropractic treatment, I would highly recommend Dr. Krohse. I haven’t been to very many chiropractors throughout my life, but I find it hard to believe that you will find a better doctor to take care of your needs!"
