Kansas City TLC Groundhog Run Review

Dr. Krohse Recommends the Groundhog Run

Most winters, all but the most hardcore Iowa runners have to take some of their running indoors. For many this means grinding away on a "dreadmill" with stinky, sweaty gym rats annoyingly close in your personal space. However, two races in the Kansas City metro offer a far different type of indoor run just three hours away.

On January 29, my girlfriend, Val, and I ran the Children’s TLC Groundhog Run. This race takes place entirely underground in a system of large, street-width tunnels that make up the Hunt Midwest Subtropolis. The subtropolis is located just north of the Ameristar Casino not far from Worlds of Fun on the east side of KC. Parking was simple in the casino parking lot with shuttle buses to the subtropolis entrance. The 5k ran at 9 and we arrived shortly after that race started to pick up our race packets and T-shirts for the 10k which started at 10. Race goodies were a bit sparse with just a plain cotton race shirt and some flyers for other races.

The race was chip-timed and limited to 3,500 participants. It reached capacity shortly after the new year. The course was made up of a 5k loop with 10k racers going around twice. I was excited at the prospect of a pancake flat course, but there were some gentle, rolling hills in there that caught me by surprise. I had two concerns going into the race. One was that there would be a lot of sharp turns requiring significant slowing. There were really only two turns that required some slowing. My other concern was that the air quality would be poor. When I'm running I get a bit of an entitlement-attitude that I deserve fresh air since I'm out working hard. I get annoyed if I have to run through cigarette smoke or near a busy, exhaust-smelling road. Overall, I'd say the air quality was great. There was just one 50 yard section that had a strong rotten-egg smell, but it happened to be shortly before the finish line. I was so pooped by the end of my second lap that I was actually thrilled to hit the nasty section as it signified just a minute or so of intense exertion left. The air temperature also fluctuated more than expected. Some sections felt like they reached nearly 70 degrees while certain areas took us close to the tunnel exits and temperatures dropped to more pleasant low 60s. I can't say that the scenery was great, but it was somewhat intriguing. I was interested to see that many major companies as well as the government use the subtropolis for storage. I pondered what government secrets might be hidden underground in KC.

Both Val and I enjoyed our runs. Post-race treats were fairly standard with fresh-looking cinnamon rolls being the main premium treat. Overall, I would highly recommend the Groundhog Run as a great option to beat the usual winter running blues. I learned from another runner that a similar race takes place in a different tunnel system on the west side of Kansas City in early December each year. Check out the Jingle Bell Run/Walk if a race like this sounds up your alley (or tunnel) and you just can't wait till next January.

Post-race, Val and I tried Fogo de Chao Brazilian Churrascaria. It was a great, unique dining experience with a tantalizing salad bar and 15 delicious barbecued meats available. Each diner is given a coaster with one green and one red side. If you set it on the table with the green side up, one of the courteous waiters will arrive every minute or so to offer you a different cut of succulent meat sizzling off the skewer. Everything we tried was delicious. I especially enjoyed the smoked salmon from the salad bar. We walked out very satisfied! These Brazilian barbecues are also available in other larger metros such as Minneapolis.

Dr. Krohse, Jeanne, Sandy, & Peter

Sandy Holmes – Billing & Back Office Manager

Background: It's great to be working again! I retired from the corporate world 12 years ago where I spent many years focused on developing and overseeing areas that provided high quality, timely customer service for life insurance and annuity policyowners and agents. I'm one of those people who yearned to spend more time enjoying my children as they were growing up and had an epiphany one day whereby I decided it was time to quit thinking about it and in fact, do it! My years of not working also allowed me to have the time to spend as caregiver and advocate for my widowed mom, her gravely ill sister and most recently my 94-year-old uncle. At times, my life resembles chapters out of the book Tuesdays with Morrie. My husband of 35 years and I recently became empty nesters and, as I pondered getting back into the workplace, I knew I wanted to work in an environment and for a cause that I feel passionately about: chiropractic care. Years of being the soccer mom, girl scout leader and carpool queen, left me with significant right leg pain and sciatica from driving, driving and more driving. Several years ago, I became tired of masking the painful symptoms with medicines and went in search of explanations for the cause of my pain and solutions for feeling better on a consistent basis. Chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises have worked wonders for me.

Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: I believe in the work that Dr. Krohse does and I like his mission statement and philosophy for assessing and treating patients. I spend most of my time working behind the scenes on insurance, accounting and billing-related issues, which I love. With a business major in finance and insurance, I know that many people don't necessarily understand their insurance and I enjoy the challenge of ensuring that patients receive the benefits to which they are entitled.

What I enjoy outside of work: Quilting, gardening, Sudoku, reading and vacationing with my family.

How I give back to the community: I've spent the past 15 years of my life heavily involved in the WDM School system as a volunteer and frequent chaperone while supporting and promoting fine arts and music education.

Words to live by: I have a favorite Plato quote: "...as the years go by, time will change and even reverse many of your present opinions. Refrain, therefore, awhile from setting yourself up as judge of the highest matters." And I dearly love the poem "The Station" by Robert J. Hastings.

Favorite local restaurant: Fleming's for a fancy night out, Tasty Tacos for something quick, yummy and local and Fuel for a refreshing dish of yogurt.

Something most patients don’t know about me: During my 12 year hiatus from working, I literally created my own bucket list and have slowly, but surely, been crossing things off. But.....I keep adding to it too! Scariest thing still on the list? Doing a tandem parachute jump from an airplane.

Peter Lovan – Practice Representative

Background: I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. I began and graduated from Des Moines Christian School. After graduating in 2008, I began my college education at Iowa State University and DMACC with a major in computer science. Coming this semester, I will be transferring to Grandview College as a junior. I recently got married to my high school sweetheart in October of 2011. My wife and I adopted two dogs from the Animal Rescue League, and we are already seeing that parenting is a challenge!

Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: I like meeting new people and being a part of their recovery. It's amazing to see the progress first hand with patients.

What I enjoy outside of work: I enjoy fitness and recreational sports. I currently play in an indoor soccer team with a few of my friends. My wife and I enjoy outdoor activities. We love taking our dogs to the dog park, fishing, and just being a newly married couple,

How I give back to the community: I like to volunteer with Meals from the Heartland, Habitat for Humanity, and Kids Against Hunger. In the summer, I enjoy helping my family run the Meals from the Market stand at the Downtown Farmer's Market. I benefit from knowing our own community is being helped by other local Iowans.

Words to live by: Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. -Jim Rohn

Favorite local restaurant: Mustard's Barbeque has the best rib, chicken combination platter.

Something most patients don’t know about me: I can speak fluent Laos and Thai. I also enjoy cooking and baking new and traditional dishes.

Jeanne Recommends Red Rossa Restaurant

This is one of our very favorite places for a light fun dinner. My husband, Brad, loves the pizza. It’s baked in a wood burning oven and the Chicken Alfredo or the BBQ Chicken are his favorites. My favorite is one of the delicious salads "a libretto" style. That means that they serve the cold salad wrapped in a warm soft pizza crust. It’s the best of both - eating healthy and light but still having the comfort of warm bread! I have tried several of the salads and they are all tasty!! They also have a wide variety of nice wines if you are so inclined. My favorite beverage is their iced tea. It is called "China Mist" and it’s difficult to find in the Des Moines area. The atmosphere is family friendly. Even though the dining room isn't huge, it's very comfortable. I hope that you get a chance to check it out soon! :)

Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete – Loran Storts

Loran is a busy man! Along with his endurance coaching business, Iron Works, he also assists with coaching the Dowling cross country team. Loran is a true competitor and an awesome example for the athletes he coaches! At Compass Chiropractic, we are glad to have helped him achieve his fitness and health goals as described below.

As an endurance athlete I have had my share of injuries over the past 30+ years of training & racing. I had been looking for someone that practices ART so that is how I found Compass Chiropractic. Dr Krohse took the time to ask questions, listened to my specific needs, pinpointed areas that could be strengthened, and showed me additional stretches/strengthening that I could do on my own. In the 6 weeks I have been seeing Dr Krohse I feel much more in-tune with my body; he has helped me work through some injuries that would otherwise sideline me for a couple of weeks. Thank you Dr Krohse for helping me stay on top of my game and on the podium at the races!
