Purification with a “Side-Effect” of Weight Loss Talk & Dinner

At 6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 14 Compass Chiropractic will host a presentation by Dr. David Krohse on the Standard Process Purification Program. This program has helped about 25 patients in our office reach better health and change their weight. Most have lost about eight to nine percent of their body weight in 21 days. Dr. Krohse used the program as a jump start to lose 37 pounds this year (see before and after pics below). Additionally, the program has the ability to drastically change lipid profiles.

A “pure” dinner will be served so come hungry! RSVP to attend the presentation with name, phone, and email to 515.309.1217 or compasschiro@gmail.com.

A Special Fundraiser – Patient Appreciation Day!

Tuesday, September 21 will be a patient appreciation day, when any established patient can donate $20 or more to Special Olympics and receive any needed adjustments, brief Active Release Techniques treatments (appointments will be kept to 10 minutes), and muscle stim or mechanical table massage all for free. Snacks will be served! We have raised over $1,300 so far but would love to get much closer to our goal of $2,500 donated!

Through September 30, any new patient who donates $50 or more to Special Olympics Iowa will receive a complementary first visit (exam and any needed spinal X-rays up to $300 value).

The Carnation Experiment #2

The first Carnation Experiment was interesting and educational. We had requests to do another experiment and gladly obliged. View the results below!

One Week

One Week - Coffee vs. Water

One Week - Bud Light vs. Water

Nine Days

12 days

Two Weeks

Observations: Bud Light was neck and neck with water for the healthiest carnation. Kirkland brand water from Costco may be significantly better than Ice Mountain. The Kirkland water carnation in the first experiment still looked decent at 3 weeks while the Ice Mountain carnation tanked after two weeks.

Connie recommends Cincinnati Chili

My husband Tony was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and we just recently took a quick trip back to visit family and to eat at the Skyline Chili restaurant to devour Cincinnati Chili. It is my husband’s favorite restaurant and he has to eat there every day that we are in Cincinnati. I enjoy it too, but not like Tony does. He has one focus when he goes home: get to Skyline every day and twice a day would even be better.

Cincinnati Chili is unique because the secret ingredients are unknown but it is an old Greek recipe. It is a chili meat sauce with a very distinct flavor; I can taste cinnamon in it and maybe a hint of chocolate. The chili meat sauce is served over spaghetti noodles or hotdogs with a huge pile of cheese, a few diced onions and a side order of oyster crackers to sprinkle on top if you desire.

Since we don’t get home to Cincinnati very often, Tony has perfected the recipe with chili mix packets he purchases over the internet. He could never make it from scratch because he has no clue what the spices are that gives it that unique taste. If you are ever driving through the Cincinnati area, check out one of the many restaurants that serve Cincinnati Chili. Better yet, now that the weather is getting cooler try making Cincinnati Chili at home. The smell is incredible when it is simmering and you will be enjoying a meal full of flavor that will satisfy everyone in your family.

Abbey recommends Mickey’s Irish Pub - Great food and great service!

When I moved to Waukee in late May I was unfamiliar with the area as a whole, from what streets to take to what restaurants were popular. The day that I moved into my apartment we went to Mickey’s Irish Pub because it was conveniently located close to our apartment. This being the first time to the pub we were not sure how good the food would be, but we were surprised to discover that the entire experience was great and it has been a place that we now frequently go to. When you walk in you are greeted and then almost always seated immediately. While you are waiting for your food you can munch on free peanuts that they keep in a barrel next to the tables. Then when your food comes everyone is silent because it’s just that yummy. My personal favorite is the Paco Pork Sandwich with their delicious side of kettle chips. While that is my favorite and I usually always order it, they have a huge variety of dishes to choose from. Also, if you like karaoke they have it every weekend starting at 9:00 pm. If you want a new restaurant to try definitely try Mickey’s Irish Pub! It has great food, great service, and a great atmosphere!

Dr. Krohse Recommends “Daily Tooth Brushing”

It would be pretty silly to write an article on strategies to include tooth brushing into your day! We just do it. Yet, teeth are one of the most easily replaceable parts of your body. Your spine, on the other hand, has no replacement, and surgeries to fix problems in it are considered a last resort with considerable risks. Spinal disorders are the number one cause of disability in people over age 50! The average lifespan is currently over 75 years old. Consider the prospect of a long life in a wheelchair or with chronic pain and start performing the equivalents of tooth-brushing for the spine and body. Read these simple and time-efficient strategies to maintain your spine and knees.

Strategies below are general recommendations and do not take into account your personal health. Please consult our office to schedule an appointment where we’ll evaluate whether these exercises are appropriate for you and schedule a rehab session to make sure you are doing these exercises properly for maximum benefit.

Neck “Tooth Brushing Strategies”

Our bodies are designed to stand upright, but we spend the majority of our time bent forward in flexion. This leads to postural changes, neck muscular strain, and joint dysfunction in the neck. Robin McKenzie’s exercises recommended in “Treat Your Own Neck” can easily be implemented as described below to counteract the negative effects of too much time seated at desks, on couches, and in cars. Pick up the book in our office ($10) or online.

McKenzie Neck Exercises

• Perform 5-10 head retractions every time you go for a drive.
• Perform 10 head retraction/neck extension and rotation combinations while you let conditioner maintain your hair’s health in the shower.
• Sit with good posture; use a McKenzie Lumbar Roll (also available at Compass Chiropractic)

Low Back “Tooth Brushing Strategies”

Muscular imbalances in between the hips and low back and a lack of “core stability” lead to most cases of chronic dysfunction and low back pain which can lead to surgeries and disability. Address the most common muscular imbalance by diligently doing McKenzie lumbar extensions as described in “Treat Your Own Back”. Address core stability by sitting with good posture on an exercise ball or “Balance Disc” (Burst-resistant balls and inflatable balance discs are $30 at our office)

McKenzie Lumbar Extensions

• Perform 10 lying extensions while reading the paper or watching the morning show in the morning and another set in the evening.
• Perform 10 standing extensions each time you use the restroom.

Stability exercises

• Sit on an exercise ball at work (focus on sitting upright or you’ll lose the benefit)
• Purchase a Balance Disc to sit on at work ($30 at our office)
• Watch TV shows in the evening on an exercise ball

Knee “Tooth Brushing Strategies”

Knee problems severely limit mobility. Single leg squats are considered the best exercise to improve the stability of your knees. If you have already had any knee problems or consider your knees important, begin to do these exercises daily.

• Perform single leg squats while brushing and flossing your teeth in the morning and evening
• Increase the challenge by closing your eyes while doing the squats or stand on a pillow or balance disc

Winning Without Wheat

It seems like heresy to ban pasta from endurance athletes’ diet but the proof is in the pudding.

Condition of the Month – Neck Pain

Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care. While the neck itself can be very painful, structures in the neck can also cause pain up into the head or down into the upper back, shoulders, and arms.
Whiplash injuries are especially likely to negatively affect the neck. Many times people assume that the soreness, pain, and tightness of a slower speed fender bender will go away soon. However, the collision can alter the function of the neck and lead to worse problems over time as the body tries to stabilize the injured areas.

Patients often comment that the examination performed by Dr. David Krohse is the most thorough they’ve ever received. A thorough exam enables him to determine the exact problem areas of your spine and form a plan of care to restore normal function in your neck. The goal of the plan will be long term neck stability. Hands-on or gentle, instrument-assisted spinal adjustments will be used to restore function to injured joints while Active Release Techniques problem-focused soft-tissue treatments will address dysfunctional muscles. Other therapies such as electric stimulation and ultrasound may round out your treatment to provide complete healing while exercises and stretches will enable you to maintain the progress you make through care.

Spotlight on Team Compass Chiropractic Athlete Loran Storts

Sport: Triathlon & Running

Other Sponsors: Rasmussen Bike Shop, Fitness Sports

Day Job: Owner and Coach at Iron Works

As an endurance athlete I have had my share of injuries over the past 30+ years of training & racing. I had been looking for someone that practices ART so that is how I found Compass Chiropractic. Dr Krohse took the time to ask questions, listened to my specific needs, pinpointed areas that could be strengthened, and showed me additional stretches/strengthening that I could do on my own. In the 6 weeks I have been seeing Dr Krohse I feel much more in-tune with my body; he has helped me work through some injuries that would otherwise sideline me for a couple of weeks. Thank you Dr Krohse for helping me stay on top of my game and on the podium at the races!
