Should I try it?A: If you enjoy group exercise or need the extra accountability signing up for a class can offer, yoga and Pilates are excellent options to increase the stability of your back and see pain decrease as a result. However, in my practice I have found that through a very thorough initial exam, I am able to determine exactly which muscles are the causes of the pain. I can then recommend a stretching and strengthening program which decreases back pain rapidly and only takes a few minutes a day. Exercises alone often won't break a patient out of a cycle of ongoing back pain. That's because dysfunctional joints and tough scar tissue also cause pain and limit improvement. There are 132 joints in the spine alone. The goal of specific hands-on or gentle instrument-assisted adjustments is to restore problem joints in the spine to normal function. Tough scar tissue and tight muscles are addressed in my office with Active Release Techniques (ART). ART very specifically combines the two options for addressing muscle problems, stretching and massage, to generate high amounts of tension on the problem spots. Patients often experience rapid results when the pain-causing inflexibility, muscle weakness, problem joints, and scar tissue are all addressed simultaneously. A return to pain-free living is a common outcome. A complimentary consultation is always available, where you can share what you’re experiencing and learn how my care addresses and resolves the multiple causes of many patients’ conditions.Condition of the Month – Neck PainNeck pain is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care. While the neck itself can be very painful, structures in the neck can also cause pain up into the head or down into the upper back, shoulders, and arms if there is injury or dysfunction present. Whiplash injuries are especially likely to negatively affect the neck. Many times people assume that the soreness, pain, and tightness of a slower speed fender bender will go away soon. However, the collision can alter the function of the neck and lead to worse problems over time as the body tries to stabilize the injured areas.Patients often comment that the examination performed by Dr. David Krohse is the most thorough they’ve ever received. A thorough exam enables him to determine the exact problem areas of your spine and form a plan of care to restore normal function in your neck. The goal of the plan will be long term neck stability. Spinal adjustments will be used to restore function to injured joints while ART treatments will address damaged soft tissues. Other therapies such as electric stimulation and ultrasound may round out your treatment to provide complete healing while exercises and stretches will enable you to maintain the progress you make through care.Check Yourself! – PostureFind out if your posture is correct! While standing normally, have a friend or family member put a finger on the tip of your shoulder. Have them draw a line straight up from that point to your head and see what it lines up with.On a person with proper posture, the tip of the shoulder will line up with the hole in the ear. If the head is further forward with the tip of the shoulder lining up with a point behind the ear, there will be additional stress on the muscles and joints of the neck. This can lead to neck pain, headaches, and symptoms down into the upper back or arms. After a thorough exam at Compass Chiropractic, Dr. Krohse will be able to recommend a plan to improve your posture and relax muscles around your neck which may be causing pain.Dr. Krohse’s Favorite Exercises – Wall Angels
This exercise effectively improves posture and muscle balance of the upper back and neck.1) Stand with your back and shoulders against a wall. 2) Raise your arms so that your elbows and hands are against the wall. Tuck your chin and press your head back against the wall.3) Slowly raise your arms so that they touch above your head. Focus on keeping your head, hands, and elbows all pressed against the wall as you go through this movement and return to the starting position.Perform 20 Wall Angels once or twice daily. Most report experiencing a stretch in their upper back while feeling the muscles in the back of their neck and upper arms work.CalendarMarch 27 from 4-9 - Hy-Vee Ladies Night – Compass Chiropractic is presenting sponsorApril 2 from 5-7 PM - Compass Chiropractic Open House1st Tues each Month – Kid's Day – Children under 13 receive ANY needed services (exams, adjustments, ART) at no charge 2nd Tues each Month – Athletes Day – Athletes any age bring a team picture or action picture and receive 1st day services (exam and any needed X-rays) at no chargeMassage and ART Compared
