Just wanted to drop you a line thanking you so much for last night's workshop. I incorporated the simple techniques into my run tonight and I ran faster than I ever have, had more energy at the end - never ended up feeling winded or tired and actually felt like I could have gone another couple of miles - and my knees didn't hurt and aren't hurting now at all! Thank you so much. I'm thrilled and looking forward to my long run this Saturday to see what a difference it makes there.

The Difference between Girls and Boys

Dr. Krohse’s cousin in Colorado shared this hilarious school work brought home by his twins.

Connie recommends Still Missing by Chevy Stevens

As soon as I started reading this book I struggled to put it down. It keeps your attention from beginning to end, and when you are not reading it you think about what the victim is going through.

It is about a realtor, Annie O’Sullivan, who is kidnapped from an open house she is hosting. This book is different because it is actually told by her after she escapes a year later. She is talking to her therapist and retells her story while at the same time she is trying to survive back in the real world. I have seen so many movies where someone is kidnapped and the whole story is about finding the victim but that is usually when the story ends. This story is told beautifully because it keeps you in suspense of what happened to her during her time in captivity and is also about how she is coping and what she is going through trying to live a normal life again. So if you are looking for a great read while the weather is still cold, wrap up in a blanket and grab this book. You will not be able to put it down.

Abbey Recommends a Night of Bowling

Ask yourself this question: When was the last time I went bowling? If you have or haven't gone in a while I highly recommend a Friday night of bowling with close friends. A couple of months ago I went bowling with a couple of really good friends and had absolute blast. I had not gone in probably four to five years and couldn't believe how much I missed it and I can't wait to do it again! Some bowling alley's offer night bowling which means the bowling alley is set up with black lights, fun lights, and music that make for a fun experience and puts you in a happy mood. Also, as a former athlete is was fun to be in a competitive atmosphere again. So if you are looking for a fun night with a little bit of competitive edge I recommend a night of bowling! It's great for kids of all ages ( including those that are over 20 :) ).

Dr. Krohse Recommends Personal Trainers and Coaches

Few reach true greatness without a great coach in their life. The best coaches provide the knowledge and accountability to turn your dreams into goals and your goals into accomplishments. I feel lucky to have been able to glean knowledge and inspiration from these awesome individuals, and recommend them to you when you’re ready to transform your life.

Personal Trainers

Kassem Hanson of Hanson Performance

Kassem is one of the smartest guys I know. His clients are raving fans and get results! Through the Poliquin Biosignature Method he is able to ensure your body is functioning and burning fat optimally. Through Structural Balance assessment he finds and addresses muscle imbalances, muscle weakness, and inflexibility that can cause injury or limit results. Trust Kassem to transform your body into a fat-burning, muscle-building machine! I strongly recommend Kassem.

John Hindley of Aspen Athletic Clubs

I got to chat with John for a while recently and was very impressed. He’s an ultramarathon man who seems like he would be a great motivator and would be fully capable of forming a successful plan for you whether your goal is to run a 100 miler or lose 100 pounds. If you’re a member of Aspen Athletic Clubs I recommend John Hindley.

Endurance Coaches

Loran Storts of Ironworks Faith and Fitness

Loran Storts is one of the most inspiring guys I know. His focused intensity in his own athletic pursuits is matched by his desire to enhance the lives of those around him. Through Ironworks Faith and Fitness he coaches triathletes and distance runners and also offers a number of group workouts and workshops. This winter he’s been hosting the Wednesday Night Sufferfest, where participants bring donations for people in need around the world and in return receive a vomit-inducing workout with a number of other gluttons for punishment. Like Ironworks on Facebook to see all the opportunities to get some Loran in your life. I promise you’ll be inspired!

Julie Kirkpatrick of Zoom Performance

Julie Kirkpatrick would be an awesome choice for anyone seeking professional coaching in an endurance sport. She is an accomplished athlete herself and works for Ames as a personal trainer as well. As a member of the excellent Zoom Performance coaching team, she is backed up by some of the top coaches and athletes in the community.

Everything You Know about Nutrition is Wrong

This is one of the best articles I’ve read about nutrition. In my opinion, it is what the new USDA Dietary Guidelines should be if the USDA wasn’t in a conflict of interest where it has to support all types of farmers as well as manufacturers of overprocessed crap (pardon my French).

& a Recipe

Dr. Krohse’s Super-Healthy Salsa Cilantro Pepper Quinoa Soup

This simple and filling soup starts with a base of Birdseye Frozen Pepper Mix having only 25 calories per cup. Whole grains come from the “superfood” quinoa (keen-wa). It can easily be customized to suit the nutritional needs of vegetarians, pescetarians, and meat-lovers. I love it!

In a large pot bring to a boil:

4 bags Birdseye Frozen Pepper mix
1 bundle cilantro
1 tablespoon fresh or dried garlic
2 cans crushed or diced tomatoes or Rotel
Salsa/picante sauce to your desired spice level and flavor (I probably added 3-4 cups of medium Pace Picante Sauce)
1-2 cups water

In a separate pan prepare 1 cup of whole grain quinoa according to directions. Add to the large pot.

Add your desired protein source. I added chicken but it would be great with extra-firm tofu cubes or shrimp as well. You could also add black beans or garbanzo beans.

Turn heat to low and simmer 30-45 minutes.

Serving recommendations:

Mix some low-fat cottage cheese in to your bowl to bump up the protein content and take the place of sour cream and cheddar cheese.

Sprinkle a few crushed Baked Tostitos onto your bowl to give it a little crunch.

Enjoy!

Condition of the Month – Shoulder Pain

Only one bone, the collarbone, connects the shoulder to the central body. Because of this, the shoulder has great range of motion but requires tremendous coordination of the muscles in the region to work properly. Important muscles include the rotator cuff muscles as well as the shoulder blade stabilizing muscles. All of these muscles are controlled by nerves exiting the spine in the lower neck and very top of the back. If this area of the spine becomes injured or aggravated, it can cause pain and dysfunction in the shoulder. Additionally, problems in the muscles of the shoulder themselves can cause pain into the neck. Poor posture is a major cause of pain between the shoulder blades in the upper back.

A thorough exam determines problem muscles, joints, and nerves in the shoulder region. Stabilizing and healing an injured shoulder starts with restoring proper control of the shoulder muscles. Adjustments of the lower neck decrease joint and nerve irritation and restore that control. The appropriate Active Release Techniques problem-focused soft tissue work, strengthening exercises, and stretches will also be recommended to fix the shoulder quickly and permanently.
