Recent Advanced Additions at Compass Chiropractic

Arthrostim Adjusting Instrument: The Arthrostim Adjusting Instrument has recently been added as an option to provide optimal care at Compass Chiropractic. This handheld adjusting instrument puts 12 impulses per second into problem spinal, arm, or leg joints. The force of the impulses can be adjusted instantly from ounces to 40 pounds making it ideal to address joints all over the body as well as children, seniors, and pregnant patients. It will allow Dr. Krohse to make rapid changes in patients' pain levels, range of motion, and joint function. Those who prefer that their neck or low back not be rotated during adjustments will especially appreciate this new adjusting instrument.

Myovision Surface EMG: Myovision surface (electromyography) EMG is able to determine real time tension in the muscles along each side of the spine. Often spinal muscles around problem areas clench down. In the low back, weakened spinal muscles can be a partial cause ongoing pain. The Myovision enables Dr. Krohse to determine even more specifically the causes of pain and put together a plan to fix the problems.

$188 Guaranteed Custom Orthotics Reorder Special

Our custom orthotics provider, Foot Levelers, has announced a special promotion for the month of December where any spinal pelvic stabilizers custom orthotics reorder is available at $188. If you have purchased a pair of orthotics and have found them to be beneficial, this is the best deal available to pick up a second pair for a different pair of shoes.

National Spinal Health Month

Compass Chiropractic promoted National Spinal Health Month (October) by offering a complementary first visit (exam and any needed spinal X-Rays) to all new patients. This promotion extends from October 15 through November 15. Call 515.309.1217 to schedule!

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

I came in for what I thought was a chronic hamstring pain that I could not get to go away. From November of 2007 until October 1 the level of pain was getting to be so high that I was ready to give up my only real hobby – running. Then I meet Dr. David after a running event. He uses a couple of terms describing my condition and believes he can help. It seems like a futile effort but low and behold within only a couple of sessions the problem was going away! While visiting him I also mentioned my sore knees. With therapy and alignment that too has also dissipated. Can I believe it? Hardly not, but I have to; the pain is gone within one month! Unbelievable - thanks a bunch!

(To someone considering trying chiropractic care with Dr. Krohse, I’d say) What are you going to lose? Money, time. If he can help your body do what it’s supposed to do, let me ask you why wouldn’t you see him, unless you like pain

Thanks for a Record Month!

More than 30 new patients found their way to improved health at Compass Chiropractic during the month of October! Thank you to all patients and friends of Compass Chiropractic who have referred friends and family members in to see Dr. Krohse!

Compass Chiropractic would also like to thank a business that has been a key contributor to the success during October.

Big Buddy Media’s web design and search engine optimization have been phenomenal at educating potential patients online what Compass Chiropractic has to offer. The Compass Chiropractic website consistently helps patients looking for an ethical, results-focused chiropractor in the Des Moines area find their way to Dr. Krohse.

Buddy Rigotti from Big Buddy Media created the website and it went live in January, 2008. From the day the site went live, it showed up at the top of Yahoo's search results. It took a little longer, but Compass Chiropractic is currently the top Google search result for the terms “Des Moines chiropractor”! The website brings new patients to Compass Chiropractic on a weekly basis.

Though Big Buddy Media is based out of Las Vegas, Buddy Rigotti is able to rapidly produce the highest quality websites for businesses around the nation. Big Buddy Media also has a special interest in designing highly usable websites for churches and other community outreach organizations. Contact Buddy Rigotti at Big Buddy Media if you are looking for a fantastic website that potential clients, customers, or patients will consistently find when they search for it.

Active Release Techniques Receives National Coverage

Active Release Techniques is frequently featured in articles on new highly effective therapies, especially in the sports medicine world. In the October, 2008 issue of National Geographic Adventure, Ian Dille outlined four new therapies he used to rapidly recover from a knee injury he experienced through his professional cycling career:

Active Release Techniques: Overuse injuries, like tennis elbow and my own knee pain, are common in sports that stress repetitive movements. Your overworked muscles, tendons, and ligaments suffer micro-traumas and build up scar tissue to stabilize the site of the injury – but that scar tissue also hinders the stressed area’s return to normal function.
Through the use of patented massage methods, practitioners of Active Release Techniques (ART) manually break apart the scar tissue. But it’s no spa treatment. ART therapists dig their fingers into the injured area with vigor. Data on its effectiveness is limited, but researchers at the University of California, San Diego, used ART to successfully treat over 70 percent of carpal tunnel syndrome patients. ART typically runs $120 for the initial appointment and $75 for each subsequent treatment. My knee felt more limber and moved with less pain moments after just one 20-minute session

It’s been exciting to offer this highly effective technique to the Des Moines metro area. The most common conditions resolved with Active Release Techniques in my office have been knee pain, shoulder pain and instability, carpal tunnel syndrome (hand numbness, tingling and weakness), plantar fasciitis (arch of the foot pain), tennis elbow, and chronic neck pain and headaches. Care at Compass Chiropractic is significantly more reasonable than what the author of the article paid, with treatments covered by most insurances and just $36 if paid at the time of service.

Condition of the Month – Maintenance Care

People understand the importance of maintaining their:

Teeth: I brush twice daily and get in to the dentist for my 6 month checkups

Cars: I appreciate when the trustworthy experts at Shade Tree Auto in Grimes (515.986.5241) put a sticker up reminding me to get my oil changed on time

Appearance: I schedule my haircuts with Amber Winders at Serenity Aveda Lifestyle Salon in Valley West Mall (515.223.6204) every five weeks so that things don’t get out of control

Finances: I sit down with Dan Durant from Financial Architects (515.457.1276) periodically to make sure everything is in order

Levels of Stress: I get in for a massage with Nancy Plagman from Oak Tree Therapeutic Massage (515.971.7991) once a month

Fitness: I exercise regularly and work out at Aspen Athletic Clubs – Merle Hay (515.270.5860) Hickman (515.278.2582) West Glen (515.222.1899)

However, I often hear from people who have never tried chiropractic, “I don’t want to try chiropractic because it seems like once you start going you have to keep going forever.” Do these same people avoid getting their oil changed because the mechanic may suggest they maintain their car engine rather than just wait for it to seize up? Are they offended when the dentist recommends they brush and floss and come in for periodic checkups rather than just wait for their teeth to fall out. I don’t think so!

“Even a Mack truck needs an occasional realignment”

Maintaining your spine with periodic checkups and care as needed makes a lot of sense. Statistically, spinal problems are the number one cause of disability in people over age 50. While you can get a new car and have false teeth made, there’s no replacement available if your spine stops working for you. Great looks and strong finances won’t seem so important if you have to enjoy them from a wheelchair.

Some patients I see are already geared toward wellness. They realize that a healthy spine is essential for a long, active life and are excited to get on a schedule to maintain their spine. Others choose to experience a few flare-ups with severe pain, days missed from work, and missed opportunities before they decide to maintain their spine. Then I see other patients who don’t suffer severe flare-ups but rather realize about once a year that they’ve been putting up with moderate headaches, back pain, or neck pain for 7 or 8 months and get fed up with it and come in to see me for long enough to get back to feeling normal. Then they go a few months before they get fed up with the pain and come to see me again. If you are one of these patients, consider getting on a spinal maintenance schedule. Talk with me and I’ll help find a schedule to keep you feeling great and functioning properly all the time.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations
I had the privilege of being invited to a BNI (Business Networking International) West-End Chapter meeting where I first met Dr. David Krohse. Dr. Krohse gave a presentation on ART (Active Release Technique) for knees. Now I must tell you I was not a big fan of going to a doctor for any medical conditions. I tell you this so you will understand the depth of pain I experienced from a high school basketball injury in 1988. The only remedy I was aware of at the time was surgery. Since I knew I would not play basketball again, I did not force the issue. Thus I went for the next 20 years in knee pain. The pain continued to get worse. It became difficult for me to run and to exercise.
Now you understand why I was so intrigued with Dr. Krohse when he said he could perform ART without surgery. I did not believe he could help. I went in a skeptic and came out a believer. I am proud to say Dr. Krohse not only helped to alleviate the pain in my knee, he also gave me a new found respect for Chiropractors. After all he was the first Chiropractor I had the privilege of meeting. Dr. Krohse made a great first and lasting impression on me and my knees.
Thank you for all the work you do.
Respectfully,

Condition of the Month – Knee Pain
Knee pain can be one of the most frustrating conditions as it makes it nearly impossible to maintain decent levels of fitness. Often a knee injury is the starting point of a downward cycle toward poor health and ongoing pain.
Fortunately for Central Iowans, Compass Chiropractic is often able to offer effective nonsurgical solutions for knee pain. Care for knee pain begins with a thorough examination to determine the sources of the pain. These sources can include misalignments of the knee joint, scar tissue around the knee, and increased stress on the knee due to flat feet.
Dr. David Krohse is able to address each of these common causes. Hands-on or gentle instrument-assisted chiropractic extremity adjustments address misalignments in the knee joint. Active Release Techniques is extremely effective at resolving scar tissue around the knee. Flat feet can be supported with recommended off-the-shelf or guaranteed custom orthotics following a digital foot scan to determine exactly what is needed.
If you know someone suffering from knee pain please recommend that they visit Compass Chiropractic before trying surgery. Even if surgery eventually becomes necessary, surgeons around the country are implementing Active Release Techniques into their recommended pre and post surgery rehab procedures.
A no-charge consultation is always available where Dr. David Krohse will thoroughly explain the options for care in a no-pressure environment.

Inspiring Articles

Few newspaper articles have moved me in the way the following two have. If you are in need of inspiration, please take the time to read these powerful articles telling drastically different stories of people triumphing through adversity.

Three Months After Massive Tornado, Town Begins to Feel Like Home Again

This one hits close to home. Amazing account of the epic disaster Parkersburg, IA has battled through this summer

Maverick Vancouver, B.C., Mayor Faces Olympic-size Challenge

This article was extremely inspiring to me, and will help you view the upcoming Olympics in a new light. As many of you know, before moving to Des Moines I spent two years in a community an hour south of Vancouver, and had the opportunity to drive over the bridge mentioned in the article. It's intriguing to think that I might have driven past the mayor of Vancouver as he headed to work.

Condition of the Month – Kids and Chiropractic

The top three conditions adults visit chiropractors for are back pain, neck pain, and headaches. However, many parents are surprised to learn that the reasons children visit a chiropractor are quite different.

A recent event in my family reminded me of the need to educate the community on reasons children visit chiropractors. I was talking to my mother about a month ago when she mentioned that my brother and his wife were going to be bringing my nephew, Elijah, for a medical doctor appointment concerning ongoing congestion in his ears and that they were expecting to have tubes inserted into Elijah's ears. "Have they taken him to a chiropractor?" I asked? "No," stated my mother, "Does chiropractic help with that?" I went on to share that ear infections and congestion were actually the top reason for pediatric chiropractic visits. After hanging up with my mother I quickly called my brother to share the information with him.

Since that time, Elijah has visited Dr. Roger Edkin in Cedar Rapids a few times for adjustments. Over Labor Day weekend my brother and his wife thanked me for sharing with them how chiropractic might help, as his ears are significantly better and surgery is now looking extremely unlikely for little Elijah.

Below are the top 10 reasons children visit chiropractors

1. 11.3% of visits - Earache
2. 10.6% Neck Pain
3. 10.3% Check-up
4. 8.8% Headache
5. 7.1% Upper Resp. Infection
6. 6.3% Low Back Pain
7. 4.5% Allergies
8. 3.3% Asthma
9. 3.3% Enuresis (Bedwetting)
10. 3.2% Upper Back Pain

The take home message: If your child or the child of someone you know is suffering from these conditions, consider giving safe and effective chiropractic care a chance before trying higher risk drugs and surgery.

Would you like your child to be examined to see if there are any problems. Take advantage of an upcoming Kid's Day – the first Tuesday of each month. On this day children under 13 receive any needed services at no charge!

Compass Chiropractic Fights Identity Theft

We all know someone whose identity: "great parent", "loving spouse", "strong worker", or "forever-youthful athlete" has been stolen away and replaced with a new one: "headache sufferer", "low back pain victim", "carpal tunnel hostage", or "injured-shoulder drain on society". They have resigned themselves to their fate and feel no hope of having their original identity restored.

At Compass Chiropractic we fight identity theft daily. Patients are amazed when an incredibly thorough examination rapidly apprehends the causes of their condition - the figurative identity thieves. A plan is formed to correct each cause with the most advanced non-surgical, non-drug, condition-resolving treatments available.

For dysfunctional joints (132 joints in the spine alone) which often cause back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sciatica (pain down the leg) specific hands-on or instrument-assisted adjustments are used to restore normal motion and joint function . Patented, highly effective Active Release Techniques address scar tissue and nerve irritation which cause conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, plantar fasciitis, and tennis elbow. Problem-specific exercises and stretches address the muscular causes of chronic low back pain and shoulder instability. Recommended off-the-shelf or custom orthotics address dysfunctional foot arches and resulting joint stress which cause foot, knee, hip, and low back pain.

We are pleased to say we frequently win the fight against identity theft. If you know someone whose identity has been stolen, please direct them to the identity theft experts at Compass Chiropractic.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

July 25, 2008

I have been having problems with shin splints since summer, 2007. I run cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track for my college and they had tried electric stim, ultrasound, ice, and many other things that didn't really help. I took some time off and started running again at the start of summer, 2008. I could still feel some pain when I ran. David suggested the Active Release treatment he offers and after my first visit I felt the difference. I have been getting it done once a week and it seems to be working!

(Dr. Krohse) explains everything very well and in my experience chiropractic work has really helped me.

Condition of the Month – Back Pain

Sooner or later an amazing 8 out of every 10 people in the Des Moines area will suffer through an incapacitating attack of low back pain. Of people who suffer with back pain for two weeks or longer, 40 percent will end up seeing a chiropractor. Studies have shown that the decision to see a chiropractor is wise. The US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recently appointed a panel of medical experts who reviewed some 3,900 studies on care for acute low back pain. The panel rejected bedrest, surgery (except rare cases), injections into the back, and all oral prescription drugs (such as antidepressants or steroids). In contrast, they found that spinal manipulation, which usually is performed by a chiropractor, "can be helpful for patients with acute low back problems." For pain, they found over-the-counter medications (aspirin, etc.) worked as well as prescriptions but with fewer side effects.

At Compass Chiropractic in Clive on the west side of Des Moines, effective treatment begins with the most thorough exam in order to determine all the causes of the problem. Spinal adjustments are used to restore proper function to injured or dysfunctional joints. Dr. Krohse has acquired the training and special equipment to provide flexion distraction adjustments, which stretch out the structures of the low back and are especially effective at reducing sciatica (low back pain with pain down the leg). Scar tissue and muscle adhesions will be addressed with ART. Other therapies such as massage, electric stimulation, and ultrasound will be used as needed to reduce the pain of a new back injury. Rehabilitative exercises and stretches will be recommended as needed to keep patients stable for the long term.

Stories of Exceeded Expectations:

June 12, 2008

I came to the Des Moines area to compete in the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Unfortunately, my degenerative disk disease was causing severe pain in the lower back. I had heard good things about ART and Dr. Krohse was the only one in the area who specialized in it. He was able to get me an appointment on short notice before my competition and it worked wonders. Not only did Dr. Krohse relieve the pain in my back and increase my mobility, he also performed ART on my knees and IT bands which I have struggled with as well over past years. After the treatment I had more mobility in my knees and back than I had felt in months. I went on the next day to compete in the Championships and earned my first ever NCAA All-America honors. (Marcus threw 5 feet further than his personal record - DK)

Anyone living in the area, or just in town for a visit that is experiencing back pain or any other chronic pains should schedule an appointment with Dr. Krohse. I have received injections in my knees for three years and physical therapy on my back and nothing has helped either as much as the ART with Dr. Krohse.

I am 33 years old and recently had a new baby. My wife went out of town for a long weekend and I was taking care of our son by myself. The only way you could get him to stop crying was walking with him. After 3 days of walking with him on my hardwood floors barefoot I developed a severe heel pain. My doctor diagnosed this as plantar fasciitis and recommended some home treatments. After 2 years of learning to live with the pain, I went to see Dr. Krohse, and after 6 weeks of treatment I am happy to say the pain has almost disappeared. Dr. Krohse used the ART technique and custom fit me with orthotics and the results have been great!

Dr. Krohse is professional and knowledgeable about chiropractic care. His office is organized, clean, and well run and I felt comfortable having him as my doctor.

Condition of the Month – Shoulder Pain

Patients with shoulder pain report that it affects every area of their life. Activities like putting on clothes, lifting groceries, and giving a loved one a hug cannot be taken for granted anymore, as pain is felt with every movement. Athletes with shoulder pain are often faced with the options of quitting the passion of their life, or going through a higher risk surgical procedure with no guarantee of a return to full function.

At Compass Chiropractic, a thorough examination reveals the causes of shoulder pain and limited range of motion. A plan is formed to restore normal shoulder function and pain-free living. Highly effective treatments including specific adjustments and Active Release Techniques are used to address all the causes of the problem. It is so rewarding to hear stories of how our care has enabled patients to return to their normal, healthy lives.

May 23, 2008

Compass Chiropractic has been a true delight for me. From the great cleanliness of the office to the sincere greeting and care I receive when I am there I highly recommend you check it out if you have not already.

I went to Compass Chiropractic with severe headaches and shoulder pain. Just after a couple of visits I started to notice the changes. Now my shoulder pain is completely gone and my headaches are diminishing quickly. My treatment was like no other that I had received at other Chiropractors over the years. The unique ART treatment made such a difference for me.

For a great chiropractic experience visit Compass Chiropractic.

Thank You!

The generous contributions of new and established patients during the month of May raised $1,300 for Special Olympics Iowa! Thank you for donating to this great Iowa organization. Also, thank you to all friends of Compass Chiropractic who helped spread the word about this fundraiser. We look forward to creating a similar winning situation for Variety of Iowa during the Variety Fundraiser taking place during June and July.

Draftlines Articles

Starting in June, Dr. David Krohse will have a monthly question and answer article in the Des Moines Cycle Club's Newsletter, Draftlines. The article will be titled Health Hub and will feature answers to cyclists questions on prevention and treatment of common cycling-related injuries.

Compass Chiropractic highly recommends joining the Des Moines Cycle Club. "The purpose of the club is to sponsor recreational cycling activities, encourage safe bicycling practices, promote bicyclists' rights as a transportation alternative and give interested cyclists an avenue into competitive racing. If you're new to this area or just new to bikes, or if you're a veteran tired of riding alone, an introduction to the Des Moines Cycle Club may be the best way for you to enhance your enjoyment of riding your bike."

Condition of the Month – Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Chiropractic and Active Release Techniques in combination provide some of the most impressive results when used to treat a very common and problematic condition, carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hands and forearms.
The nerves that carry all messages from the brain to the arms and hands exit the spine in the lower neck. From there they pass between and sometimes through muscles on their way to the tips of the fingers. The nerves function somewhat like a hose coming out of a house. If someone steps on the hose next to the house, it will take even less pressure further out to completely cut off the flow of water. In the same way, if there is irritation of the nerves in the lower neck, it will take less irritation of the nerves further down the arms to result in symptoms in the hands and forearms. Nerves in the arms can be irritated if scar tissue between the layers of muscle is rubbing them, or if they are being pressed on by tight muscles.

At Compass Chiropractic, Dr. David Krohse starts with a very thorough history and examination to determine exactly where the nerves affecting the hands are being irritated. If spinal problems are a factor, they will be addressed with adjustments. If the nerves are being pinched or irritated by tight muscles or scar tissue in the arms, Active Release Techniques will be used to loosen up those spots. Results are often instantaneous when the problem areas are properly addressed. Patients are thrilled to return to symptom-free living without surgery and the risks that go with it. Dr. Krohse will recommend appropriate stretching for patients to maintain their improvement.

Pain Free Knitting and Crafting

Compass Chiropractic will be hosting an innovative and much needed health talk this Thursday, May 22 on Pain Free Knitting and Crafting. As the son of a certified afghan making wizard, Dr. David Krohse has a great deal of empathy and understanding for the plights of crafters around the Des Moines area, who work for hours looking down. The class will go over causes of neck pain and hand numbness and tingling. We'll then discuss exercises and stretches to reduce the symptoms. Finally we'll discuss some advanced nonsurgical, nondrug treatment options which are often covered by the health insurance most Des Moines area patients have.

6:00 Thursday. RSVP if you're interested. Suggested $10 donation to Special Olympics Iowa.

Clive

It's interesting that the demographics and location of Clive specifically are a large factor in how Compass Chiropractic ended up where it was. Sure I looked at Clive as a centrally located city where people from all over Des Moines would be able to easily get to the clinic but my files are oddly absent of actual Clive residents. It's time for the residents of Clive to realize the quality of care available just down the street. If you're reading this and live in Clive, or know someone who lives in Clive who would like to learn the most efficient path to pain free living, send them to me for a free consultation. Better yet, have them participate in the Special Olympics Fundraiser, where I'll donate the entire first visit (exam and any needed X-Rays) if a new patient donates $30 or more to Special Olympics Iowa. This is only available through the month of May.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations:
I had been having neck and shoulder pain for 2-3 years without any medical treatment. This was affecting my sleep and my work. Within 1-2 visits with Dr. Krohse my pain was subsiding and now 1-2 months into treatment I’m sleeping better than I have in years and my pain is gone.
I would recommend chiropractic treatment to anyone. From minor aches and pains to severe pain, chiropractic treatment can alleviate your symptoms.

FAQ about ART
Q: How is Active Release Technique different from massage?
A: Massage therapy is certainly beneficial, and I refer patients to local massage therapists for whole body tightness or excessive stress. However, Active Release Techniques (ART) offers significant advantages for a variety of specific conditions.
Muscles all over your body are in layers that normally slide smoothly next to each other. If an injury or repetitive work/motion situation occurs, areas of scar tissue can form between muscles limiting normal movement and causing pain, tightness, numbness, or tingling. Scar tissue is sticky, tough stuff; think of it like very tough bubble gum. A typical deep tissue massage uses a stripping motion or deep pressure to try to break up the scar tissue. It’s a bit like taking a piece of gum and dropping it on the ground and trying to break it apart with your shoe. It’s not going to be the most effective. If you take that same piece of gum and stretch it out and have a child give it just a small karate chop, it will break easily. ART works similar to the second example. By specifically stretching muscles at the same time pressure is applied to areas of scar tissue, normal muscle movement is restored with less force and discomfort. Best of all, the results are often permanent.
ART has built a fantastic reputation for resolving difficult-to-treat conditions. Some of the most common include carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder injuries, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, sciatica, and chronic headaches, back, and neck pain.
Many health insurances cover ART as a manual therapy performed by a doctor.

Condition of the Month – Headaches
Headaches are one of the most common conditions relieved with chiropractic care. In fact, headaches are what first changed my family’s opinion about chiropractic.
The year was 1985. My mother was a nurse and had never considered going to a chiropractor for any health problem. On a trip to visit our grandparents in South Dakota, our Subaru was hit from the side by a UPS truck as we traveled at highway speed. I came out of the impact with just a few scratches, but my brother, Joshua, had been slammed violently into the side of the car. His head was split open from above his eye to the crown of his head. He was air-lifted to Wichita, Kansas and thankfully the surgeons were able to stitch him up and stabilize his condition in the following days.

When we finally returned home Joshua’s life was not in jeopardy, but it certainly wasn’t the same carefree life he had before the accident. He was plagued with frequent, severe headaches. When a child is in agony, the whole family feels the pain. My parents took him to the neurosurgeon for multiple follow-ups, desperate for a solution to return their son to normal. Medications weren’t working, so the neurosurgeon referred him to a pediatric neurologist. The pediatric neurologist looked at X-rays of Joshua’s head and neck and came up with a single recommendation, “You should try chiropractic. It looks like the problem is in his neck.”

Though my parents were skeptical, they took my brother to a chiropractor. Progress was quick to come, and Joshua was soon living without headaches. He is currently a youth pastor at Northbrook Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids with a wife and three wonderful children of his own. My mother was so impressed with the results of chiropractic care that she asked about the whiplash symptoms she had been experiencing since the accident: neck pain and headaches. When she started care, she also experienced rapid, positive results.

Growing up, my family chose to try safe and effective chiropractic first whenever an ache, pain, or numbness condition wouldn’t go away with simple home solutions. Invariably, our chiropractor would get to the bottom of the problem and solve it naturally or send us on to the right health professional for more aggressive treatments. My parents both currently go to the clinic of Dr. David Johnson, father of golfer Zach Johnson, when they can’t make it here from Cedar Rapids to see me.

If you know someone who has been putting up with headaches, please share this story with them. Other stories of chiropractic helping patients with headaches are on the testimonials page of the Compass Chiropractic website. Directions to see if your headaches are likely coming from your neck are in the headaches page of the website

March 30, 2008
Dr. David Krohse,
I want you to know that I appreciate very much the outstanding results achieved within the short period of time since I've been a patient of yours. I would like to share my positive experience with others who may also be suffering as I was.
I came to see Dr. David Krohse specifically with hopes of getting some relief from a pinched nerve in my neck. I had been experiencing numbness and tingling in my right arm, hand and fingers for several months. After a few visits and discussions about some other existing symptoms (lower back, hip, knee and ankle pain), Dr. Krohse thought we should scan my feet. Well, to my surprise we discovered that I have flat feet! Dr. Krohse then went on to explain how I might benefit from custom orthotics. I placed my order and within less than a week I was wearing my new custom orthotics.
I have been wearing these now for about six weeks or so and my hip, knee and ankle pain is pretty much gone and my lower back pain has been significantly reduced. I feel much better and I look forward to mowing the lawn, hiking the trails and playing golf, confident that I am not going to suffer the painful ramifications experienced in the past. Oh, the issue of numbness and tingling caused by the pinched nerve are now totally gone. Thank you Dr. Krohse.
Sincerely,
Carl Stam - Absolute Concepts Inc - Clive (515) 282-2133

Active Release Techniques - Performance Care for All
Active Release Techniques (generally referred to as ART) combine specific patient-assisted muscle stretching with pressure into the problem areas or scar tissue. This generates much greater tension on scar tissue than either stretching or massage alone, and frequently leads to permanent resolution of athletic conditions such as Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, runner's knee, tennis elbow, and shoulder pain. Additionally, the techniques have proven extremely effective for problems in the general population such as carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, and chronic back and neck pain.

ART was developed by Dr. Michael Leahy in Colorado and initially became known for rapidly resolving the overuse injuries suffered by elite triathletes. As the number of providers has grown, ART's reputation has spread to the greater athletic world where it can now be seen performed by doctors on the sidelines of NFL games and at ultimate fighting matches. The worlds of manufacturing and service have also taken note of ART's effectiveness - a number of major corporations such as GE, Sabre (Travelocity), Sealy Mattress, and Ball Corporation, with a manufacturing plant in Ames, bring ART providers onsite to provide preventive care for their employees with significant reductions in their work-related injury costs resulting. OSHA has called it a "Best Management Practice."

Local patients are seeing positive results with ART. Dr. Karen Kemp-Glock of Women's Health Services in Clive came to Dr. David Krohse at Compass Chiropractic with weakness and occasional tingling in her right hand. "In just two treatments my hand returned to full strength, and I've experienced no tingling since." Sandy Renshaw, owner of Purple Wren Communications, reported that, "in just a few treatments I've experienced significantly reduced headache and foot pain." Dr. David Krohse is one of just a few ART Certified Providers in Iowa.

Condition of the Month - Whiplash
Whiplash, injury resulting from a sudden jerking of the head, is a condition commonly treated at Compass Chiropractic. Often people experience symptoms resulting from an untreated or inadequately treated whiplash incident years after the injury took place. A combination of specific adjustments and ART is frequently able to greatly improve or resolve chronic symptoms of neck tightness, pain, headaches, and shoulder/arm symptoms resulting from a past whiplash injury. In the future, we hope to help patients soon after whiplash incidents, resolving joint and muscle injuries before symptoms become chronic.
Car accidents commonly cause whiplash. It's important that you know what to do in case of an accident, and we have available pamphlets for your glovebox or purse with specific instructions. Pick one up on your next visit or print one off our website - What to do in Case of A Car Accident Pamphlet. If you have been in an accident within the last two years and are still experiencing related symptoms, your care may be covered by the responsible car insurance. Call Compass Chiropractic (515) 309-1217 and we will work with you to find out what your coverage is.

Kid's Day and Athlete's Day
We believe that regular wellness checkups and chiropractic/ART treatments as needed can be the foundation for your family's life of wellness. We will be starting two special days each month to promote a healthy foundation for your active families. The first Tuesday of each month will be "Kid's Day" when children age 12 and under receive all services at no charge. The second Tuesday of each month will be "Athlete's Day" when your family's athletes (any age) can bring in a team picture or picture of them participating in their current sport and receive all first day services (exam and any necessary X-Rays) at no charge.

Northwest Chiropractic Clinic Honored
Dr. David Krohse's previous employer, Northwest Chiropractic Clinic in Mount Vernon, Washington, was honored with the Skagit Business Pulse 2007 People's Choice Award for Best Chiropractic Clinic. Dr. Krohse was a provider there through November, 2007. "I look forward to applying the principles of honesty always, constant positivity, respect for patient's time, and consistent clinical excellence to build a similar outstanding reputation in this community," stated Dr. Krohse. "I'd also like to thank the many patients in the Skagit Valley who supported Northwest Chiropractic Clinic in the survey."

Thank you!

With the generous donations of new patients, Compass Chiropractic raised $680 for the Des Moines chapter of the American Heart Association through the Have a Heart - Save a Heart Fundraiser. We believe contributing to the community's health is as important as our contributions to patients' health. In the future we look forward to supporting community organizations and offering health talks and sports evaluations. Check the calendar at www.CompassChiro.com for upcoming events.
