Condition of the Month – Knee Pain

Knee pain affects all activities and can make it impossible for a person to get the exercise they know they need.

Through a thorough initial exam, we are able to find the involved causes of an individual’s knee pain, and address them with effective, nonsurgical treatments.

Often rapid results are experienced through care at Compass Chiropractic. Typically we expect to see significant improvement within two weeks.

Dr. Krohse’s specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, combines stretching and pressure to loosen and relax problem muscles and scar tissue around the knee. Adjustments can reduce problem adhesions within the knee. Guaranteed custom orthotics or off-the-shelf inserts improve knee alignment. Patients may be guided in implementing a home exercise program to balance muscles around the knee. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

September 25, 2008

I had the privilege of being invited to a BNI (Business Networking International) West-End Chapter meeting where I first met Dr. David Krohse. Dr. Krohse gave a presentation on ART (Active Release Technique) for knees. Now I must tell you I was not a big fan of going to a doctor for any medical conditions. I tell you this so you will understand the depth of pain I experienced from a high school basketball injury in 1988. The only remedy I was aware of at the time was surgery. Since I knew I would not play basketball again, I did not force the issue. Thus I went for the next 20 years in knee pain. The pain continued to get worse. It became difficult for me to run and to exercise.

Now you understand why I was so intrigued with Dr. Krohse when he said he could perform ART without surgery. I did not believe he could help. I went in a skeptic and came out a believer. I am proud to say Dr. Krohse not only helped to alleviate the pain in my knee, he also gave me a new found respect for Chiropractors. After all he was the first Chiropractor I had the privilege of meeting. Dr. Krohse made a great first and lasting impression on me and my knees.

Thank you for all the work you do.

Important Information to Understand Your Health Insurance Choices

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/health/series/patient_money/index.html

Walecia Konrad and Lesley Alderman have been writing some beneficial articles in the New York Times to inform readers about upcoming choices they’ll need to make as they enroll in their companies’ group insurance plans.

Book Review – Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World has Never Seen

While listening to Born to Run on Clive Library audiobook, I was reminded of a presentation that a good friend and I gave for an education/coaching class during undergraduate studies at UNI. Buddy Rigotti of Big Buddy Media and Steeplesites and I had decided to give a presentation on raising self esteem in children. We anticipated finding all kinds of recommendations on giving only positive feedback, teaching kids positive self talk, and shielding them from or minimizing any negativity in their learning environment.

When we dug into the research, we found that it pointed in a different direction. Kids develop the highest self esteem in situations where they are under high but clear expectations and get real feedback about their performance. It turns out children respond best not when they are protected, but rather when they are challenged.

In Born to Run, Christopher McDougall suggests that a similar mistaken assumption has been made about the human foot, with over 40 years of increased injuries and pain to show for it. Sometime in the early 1960’s a tiny company named Nike started to make shoes to correct and protect the “imperfect” and “fragile” human foot. Over 40 years later, the majority of runners experience an injury every year. A revolution is beginning in which runners realize that their feet and legs actually perform best when they are challenged more and allowed to respond naturally. Don’t be surprised when you see increasing numbers of barefoot runners at the races next year.

Born to Run is an interesting nonfiction book that switches back and forth between historical information about running and the author’s experience helping to organize a race between the greatest ultrarunners from the USA and members of the Tarahumara, a tribe of Native Americans who fled to the Copper Canyon region of Mexico when the Spanish conquered Mexico. The tribe has survived in that rugged terrain ever since and are known as the world’s greatest distance runners. It’s interesting to note that the greatest distance runners in the world wear only thin, unpadded sandals while they run and don’t experience more frequent injuries.

Interesting lessons from the book:

1. Running can be a lifelong health-maintainer. On average, distance runners increase in speed from age 19 through 27 when they peak in speed. At what age do runners slow to their 19 year old pace? 64!

2. You don’t automatically know how to run. We would never consider pursuing swimming or dancing without lessons and/or coaching. Yet most people assume they can slip on running shoes and head out the door and not get injured. The statistics on running injuries scream otherwise. Valuable resources are available that now teach runners how to go fast and avoid injuries. Two of the ones I’ve learned about most include ChiRunning and Pose Method Running.

3. Your shoes may be hurting you more than they are helping. Your feet are a marvel of engineering. Picture a Ferrari with monster truck tires on. It wouldn’t perform as well as it is capable of. Putting a foam wedge in between your feet and the pavement can decrease the performance of your feet. If you are constantly plagued with running injuries and the recommendations above don't resolve them, it may be time to take a drastic step and kick off your shoes.

Position: Practice Representative

Background: I was raised in New Ulm, Minnesota and am an only child. I graduated from Drake University.

Favorite Aspects of Working at Compass Chiropractic: I enjoy getting to meet new people and helping them discover what our office can do to help them feel their best.

What I enjoy outside of work: Volleyball, reading, biking, and movies & popcorn at home.

Words to Live By: "It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." and "Never take yourself too seriously."

Favorite Local Restaurant: Saigon Cafe

Something most patients don't know about me: I love Korean food.

My experience with chiropractic: I saw a chiropractor once for a gymnastic injury in middle school. My parents have both used chiropractic to help them with a variety of problems.

Currently, I tend to have headaches, as well as tension in my neck and shoulder area. Dr. Krohse has given me adjustments and A.R.T., which has decreased my symptoms dramatically. I never knew what a nuisance it was to deal with frequent headaches and tension once I was able to go without them!

Condition of the Month – Numbness and Tingling

Nerve cells are very different from all the other cells in the body. While all other cells are microscopic and relatively round, individual nerve cells extend all the way from the spine to the tips of the fingers and toes. Millions of these individual cells extend out from the spine in the thicker tube-like structures known as nerves. Nerves are responsible for carrying sensation, muscle control, and organ control messages to the entire body.

Because of nerve cells’ length, they function a bit like a hose coming out of a house. If someone steps on the hose near the house, it may not cut off the flow of the water. However it will then take less pressure by someone further out to cut off the flow entirely.

Similarly, when a person experiences nerve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or burning/pulling/shocking pain in an arm or leg, there may be multiple spots between the spine and the tips of the fingers where the nerve is being “pinched.”

Chiropractic care works by restoring dysfunctional joints in the spine to normal motion, reducing the swelling that “pinches” the nerves as they exit the spine. Dr. Krohse’s other specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, loosens and relaxes problem muscles that affect nerves in the arms and legs. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to keep nerves from being pinched again. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.

A New Face at Compass Chiropractic
We’re excited to welcome Holly to the Compass Chiropractic team. She’ll be joining us as a Practice Representative, sharing with the community our focus on excellent care and fantastic results. Here are some reasons you might want to give Holly a call at 515-309-1217:
· Introduction Cakes and Bagels – Would your coworkers like to receive a gift from Compass Chiropractic along with a piece of delicious Costco cake or a Panera bagel? Call Holly to schedule a time when she can introduce Compass Chiropractic to your coworkers in a very tasteful way!
· Lunch & Learns – Score lunch for your coworkers with one of our Lunch & Learns. Holly can find a time to bring lunch for your office, and Dr. Krohse will give a 20 minute presentation on “How to Stay Young the First 100 Years At Work.” Valuable exercises on preventing neck pain, upper back pain, and headaches will be taught.
· Active Release Techniques (ART) Specialized Massage Demonstrations and Spinal Screenings – Your coworkers will love you when you get them free 15 minute Active Release Techniques treatments with Dr. Krohse. Call Holly to set up a time period where members of your office can reserve a quick spinal health check by Holly and then get an Active Release Demonstration on their painful or tight areas by Dr. Krohse.
Condition of the Month – Chiropractic Skepticism
We frequently see new patients come in who share “I don’t believe in chiropractic” only to find themselves feeling so much better a short time later with some quality chiropractic care. Hindsight is 20/20.
· Consumer Reports found that back pain sufferers rated chiropractors and chiropractic adjustments as the most effective (see the report on the back of this sheet)
· Medicare and Medicaid cover chiropractic care - your government has found chiropractic to be effective and cost effective
· All major insurances cover chiropractic care
· You have 132 joints in your spine! If one of them is not moving right, chiropractic adjustments help restore them to normal motion
Chiropractic care works by restoring dysfunctional joints in the spine to normal motion, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. Dr. Krohse’s other specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, loosens and relaxes problem muscles that can cause a variety of problems. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to stabilize their spine. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.
Fall - A great time to tell your friends and family to try care at Compass Chiropractic
If you have friends and family putting up with pain, they may find fall a great time to try our quality care. First, it always makes sense to feel good. Second, it makes sense to get your health in order before the holidays. Third, your friends and family are more likely now to have met their deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums for the year, meaning that fall can be a more cost-effective time of the year to come in for care rather than putting it off till next year when the deductibles reset.
Research for Yoga
This strong study on the effects of Yoga for people with chronic back pain may help motivate some readers of this newsletter to get their butts on a mat.
Yoga Classes Help Relieve Chronic Back Pain
I was able to meet with some local yoga studio owners and tour their studios this month.
· Lily Hou from Green Yoga House with locations in Clive and West Des Moines shared that she sees referrals from local acupuncturists and other providers. She leads classes with a number of clients seeking wellness or dealing with ongoing pain. She specifically mentioned working with people dealing with knee injuries. The beautiful studio I toured is located south of Hickman and west of 128th Street in Clive at 2204 Woodlands Parkway.
· Kris Larrison owns Breathe Studio in Clive. This studio specializes in hot yoga. Kris shared that the air temperature of 95 to 100 degrees encourages much greater flexibility along with the potential to burn more calories and purify your body. Central Iowa clients, who have experienced hot yoga in larger cities around the country, travel long distances to enjoy the classes at Kris’ studio located on the north side of University across from the Jordan Creek Hy-Vee.
· As a member of Aspen Athletic Club, I personally took advantage of the included yoga classes with Jennifer at the Merle Hay location. I thought she did an excellent job of keeping the class suitable for all ability levels and definitely felt better after the class. I’m planning on attending classes regularly at the Merle Hay and Hickman location through the late fall and winter months.

Recommended Book – Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
Dave Ramsey’s views on solving money problems resonate with my views on solving health problems. I’ve helped too many patients with chronic problems. When someone comes in with a short term problem, I recommend an intense and aggressive (in a conservative way I mean; save higher risk drugs and surgery as a later option whenever possible) plan to fix their problem as soon as possible. I don’t want my relaxed recommendations to be the cause of someone dealing with a chronic problem for the rest of their life! I attempt to give people the plan that I’m most confident will fix their problem ASAP.
In the Total Money Makeover, Dave calls America on its chronic personal finance and debt problem, and is quite persuasive in convincing readers that it’s time to get “gazelle intense” to get out of the mess they’re in. The actual steps of his plan are simple and understandable by anyone. As he likes to say, he gives “The advice your grandmother would give you, except we keep our teeth in!”
Steps in his plan include
1. $1000 emergency fund
2. Pay off all debt using the Debt Snowball
3. 3-6 months of expenses in an emergency fund
4. Invest 15% of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement
5. College funding for children
6. Pay off home early
7. Build wealth and give
This book stands out as a life-changer for me, and I am so thankful that my best friend’s mom cared about me enough to give it to me midway through undergraduate school at UNI. I feel like every high school graduate, college graduate, newly married couple, and anyone with any debt would benefit from reading The Total Money Makeover.
I also listen to Dave Ramsey’s podcasts a couple days each week through ITunes and always feel inspired and better educated as a result. Each day you’ll hear a few people call in who decided they were sick and tired of being broke and just finished paying off debts ranging from $10,000 to $200,000 within a couple years of starting Dave's plan. Also, you learn all kinds of other great financial advice as people call in with their difficult personal finance questions. He’s on the radio locally on KWKY 1150 AM at 3 PM weekdays and his Financial Peace University programs are available at local churches.
A Highly Recommended Professional – Ray Cron - Willis Auto Campus – 515-253-9600
Recently I joined the Westside BNI (Business Network International) chapter. This group of business owners and professionals meet Tuesdays at the Machine Shed at 7 AM and our goal is to work as a team to help each others’ businesses grow. Local BNI members can be a great resource, as we have all made a commitment to treat one another’s referrals of friends and family with the highest of ethics and integrity. Give me a call if you're a business owner or professional and are interested in being my guest at an upcoming meeting.
Ray Cron is a Sales and Leasing Consultant at Willis Auto Campus at Hickman and 100th Street. He has an easy job as the cars Willis carries pretty much sell themselves. Consumer ratings firm J.D. Power and Associates has named Lexus the most reliable brand in the U.S. fourteen times, and they also carry Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, and Hummer. They also have a large selection of certified and high quality pre-owned vehicles. I would definitely recommend contacting Ray next time you are looking for a quality new or used vehicle.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

July 11, 2009

Hi Dr. Krohse,

I just want you to know that my knee is 85% better since my last visit. I stretch every morning before I get up and do some of the massages that you did on my knee when if gets tired. I can walk, bend and climb up and down steps and hills, even very steep ones, without pain. Thank you so much from saving me from having surgery!

With warmest regards,
L. Walters

Condition of the Month – Sciatica

Sciatica is defined as pain that radiates from the lower back into the buttocks and down the back of one or both legs, caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerves, the largest nerves of the body. It usually begins as an acute pain in the lower back and then radiates down the back of either or both legs. There are 5 pairs of nerves that exit the spine in the lower back. These nerves make up what we know as the sciatic nerves. If the vertebrae or bones in the lower back are misaligned or out of place; or the disc between the vertebrae are swollen, bulged or herniated, the result is pressure on those nearby nerves. This can cause tremendous pain and normal daily activities become almost impossible.

Chiropractic care works on correcting misaligned or out of place vertebrae and can remove the pressure placed on the sciatic nerve, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. Active Release Techniques specialized massage loosens and relaxes problem muscles in the hip region that can pinch the sciatic nerve. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to stabilize their spine. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.

Dr. Krohse's Tips and Links

Sleep Number by Select Comfort

In the past when patients asked me what kind of bed I recommended, my answer was, "one you can return." I went on to explain that there is no perfect bed for everyone and that I'd make sure that you could return this relatively large purchase in case it didn't work out once you had a couple nights to sleep on it. Other than that, I didn't really feel able to give patients much direction other than to try out a few beds.

Recently Steve at The Sleep Number by Select Comfort Store in Valley West Mall allowed me to do a couple spinal health screenings at their store. I have to share that I will now definitely recommend that patients at least start their bed shopping at Select Comfort. I talked with a lot of owners of the beds and heard so many share that it was the "best investment they'd made." Multiple people shared that they had more than one Sleep Number bed in their house, or that they had one at their vacation house as well. Further, the beds at Select Comfort do come with a 30 day guarantee, which means they meet my only previous qualification.

Steve said I could extend a special offer to my patients. Bring in a printed copy of this email to the store and receive a t-shirt or water bottle. Talk with Steve, Terry, or Betty. The store is in the lower level of Valley West Mall next to JC Penney's and the Verizon Store.

Wiggling Their Toes at the Shoe Giants

This interesting New York Times article discusses whether running shoes have truly been a benefit to the runners of the world. It mentions ChiRunning as well as Pose Method running techniques which I've been recommending to any runners dealing with injuries. It also mentions the book "Born to Run" which has received rave reviews on Amazon.com. I'm on the waiting list to get the audiobook from the Clive Library WILBOR audiobook site.

One Injured Hamstring, a String of Treatments

This article highlights conventional options for treating an injured hamstring. I'm honestly amazed that the author did not come across Active Release Techniques as he researched the article. Most people who consult online running forums learn that it is considered the gold standard treatment for hamstring problems. It definitely seems preferred to having your own blood injected into the injury!
http://www.mediterrasian.com/

New patients always receive a couple recommendations on how proper nutrition can support their body in healing their injury. I have been recommending the Mediterranean Diet as the most beneficial diet for long term health and optimal healing. A patient shared this link with me and I must say it is a great starting point for those interested in implementing elements of the healthy Mediterranean and Asian diets into their lifestyle.

Did you know Google offers a free 411 service. When you're stuck in another city and your back "goes out" just call 1-800-GOOG411 and it'll help you find the closest chiropractors – all for free. After putting this in my phone, I've used it more than I would have thought.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

I went to Dr. Krohse when I saw that he performs ART, after I had read about ART. I thought that treatment might help me. I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis since 2004. I am a former collegiate distance runner and try to still enjoy running. It is hard to enjoy the great sport of running when you have something hurting you each step. I had tried acupuncture, physical therapy, shoe inserts, and cortisone shots. So, you could say I’ve tried about everything to get healthy.

Dr. Krohse did a thorough job of evaluating my posture and my feet. After each treatment, I felt my feet getting better. After two weeks of treatment, I was running pain free for the first time in 5 years. I know at times the scar tissue will build up and it will be painful but I know Dr. Krohse will be able to use his techniques with ART to get me back running. I would recommend ART to my athletes that I train and to any athlete who has pain that would benefit from this treatment.

“When I arrived at Dan’s office, I was pessimistic, to say the least. After spending thousands of dollars trying to heal my Achilles, I did not think that anyone or anything could help me. But after one session with Dan’s magic hands, my injury had noticeably improved. It turned out that it wasn’t my Achilles that was causing the flare-ups, but my Achilles bursa and my flexor hallucis longus (big toe muscle). Dan treated those, and I was able to run without any pain.”

Condition of the Month – Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a major problem in Des Moines residents' lives of repetitive motions and computer work. Many search for a solution for the pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness of carpal tunnel syndrome without results. We are thrilled to offer Active Release Techniques (ART) which often permanently resolves cases of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Similarly, when a person experiences nerve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or burning/pulling/shocking pain in the arm or hand, there may be multiple spots between the spine and the tips of the fingers where the nerve is being “pinched.” It is imperative to start with a very thorough exam to determine exactly where this is happening.

Active Release Techniques certified providers learn nerve entrapment protocols to free up the spots where nerves are being pinched. These protocols combine specific doctor-applied pressure into the problem spots with patient-assisted stretching of the nerves. Often patients experience immediate reduction in nerve symptoms after treatment. Stretches are recommended to keep nerve problems from returning. In my practice, I have seen multiple patients avoid surgery through Active Release Techniques care.

Many health insurances cover Active Release Techniques as a manual therapy performed by a doctor. A complimentary consultation is always available, where you can share what you’re experiencing and learn how Active Release Techniques may be able to resolve the condition.

Perform the self checks below and schedule an appointment to see Dr. Krohse if you are dealing with any nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Check Yourself – Do I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or a peripheral nerve condition like it?

First consider whether you have the symptoms: numbness, tingling, and/or sharp pains in the fingers, hands, and up into the forearms.

Perform this functional test to see if you have weakness related to carpal tunnel syndrome or a peripheral nerve condition: Try to hold your thumb to your littlest finger while a friend tries to pull them apart. Check both sides and compare. If one side is much weaker this could be a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Try Phalen’s Test: Raise your arms and bend your elbows to that your hands are in front of your chest. Put the backs of your hands together so that your fingers are pointing toward the floor. Hold this position for a minute and see if you start to experience numbness and tingling.

If any of these tests cause increased symptoms or weakness is found, it would be wise to have a thorough exam performed at Compass Chiropractic.

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

Dr. David Krohse,

I want you to know that I appreciate very much the outstanding results achieved within the short period of time since I've been a patient of yours. I would like to share my positive experience with others who may also be suffering as I was.

I came to see Dr. David Krohse specifically with hopes of getting some relief from a pinched nerve in my neck. I had been experiencing numbness and tingling in my right arm, hand and fingers for several months. After a few visits and discussions about some other existing symptoms (lower back, hip, knee and ankle pain), Dr. Krohse thought we should scan my feet. Well, to my surprise we discovered that I have flat feet! Dr. Krohse then went on to explain how I might benefit from custom orthotics. I placed my order and within less than a week I was wearing my new custom orthotics.

I have been wearing these now for about six weeks or so and my hip, knee and ankle pain is pretty much gone and my lower back pain has been significantly reduced. I feel much better and I look forward to mowing the lawn, hiking the trails and playing golf, confident that I am not going to suffer the painful ramifications experienced in the past. Oh, the issue of numbness and tingling caused by the pinched nerve are now totally gone. Thank you Dr. Krohse.

Sincerely,
Carl Stam

Break the Cycle!

The image above shows how the comprehensive conservative care offered at Compass Chiropractic is often able to resolve conditions that have not responded well to individual treatments of chiropractic, massage, or physical therapy. The image highlights that patients are often responsible for at least one third of their results through changing the stressors in their life and performing condition-resolving exercises and stretches!

A Special Fundraiser – May 1 through July 31, 2009

Through July 31, we’ll be doing a fundraiser for Special Olympics Iowa. During the fundraiser any new patient who donates $50 or more to Special Olympics Iowa will receive a complementary first visit (exam and any needed spinal X-rays up to $300 value).

We raised over $1300 during this event last year! We’ve raised about $500 so far so we have a ways to go to reach our goal of over $2,500 for Special Olympics Iowa this year. Condition of the Month – Headaches

Headaches are one of the most common conditions relieved with chiropractic care. In fact, headaches are what first changed my family’s opinion about chiropractic.

The year was 1985. My mother was a nurse and had never considered going to a chiropractor for any health problem. On a trip to visit our grandparents in South Dakota, our Subaru was hit from the side by a UPS truck as we traveled at highway speed. I came out of the impact with just a few scratches, but my brother, Joshua, had been slammed violently into the side of the car. His head was split open from above his eye to the crown of his head. He was air-lifted to Wichita, Kansas and thankfully the surgeons were able to stitch him up and stabilize his condition in the following days.

When we finally returned home Joshua’s life was not in jeopardy, but it certainly wasn’t the same carefree life he had before the accident. He was plagued with frequent, severe headaches. When a child is in agony, the whole family feels the pain. My parents took him to the neurosurgeon for multiple follow-ups, desperate for a solution to return their son to normal. Medications weren’t working, so the neurosurgeon referred him to a pediatric neurologist. The pediatric neurologist looked at X-rays of Joshua’s head and neck and came up with a single recommendation, “You should try chiropractic. It looks like the problem is in his neck.”

Though my parents were skeptical, they took my brother to a chiropractor. Progress was quick to come, and Joshua was soon living without headaches. He is currently a youth pastor at Northbrook Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids with a wife and three wonderful children of his own. My mother was so impressed with the results of chiropractic care that she asked about the whiplash symptoms she had been experiencing since the accident: neck pain and headaches. When she started care, she also experienced rapid, positive results.

Growing up, my family chose to try safe and effective chiropractic first whenever an ache, pain, or numbness condition wouldn’t go away with simple home solutions. Invariably, our chiropractor would get to the bottom of the problem and solve it naturally or send us on to the right health professional for more aggressive treatments. My parents both currently go to the clinic of Dr. David Johnson, father of golfer Zach Johnson, when they can’t make it here from Cedar Rapids to see me.

If you know someone who has been putting up with headaches, please share this story with them. Other stories of chiropractic helping patients with headaches are on the testimonials page of the Compass Chiropractic website. Directions to see if your headaches are caused by neck dysfunction below.

-Dr. Krohse

Check Yourself – Are your headaches coming from your neck?

Check the Three P’s of Neck-Related Headaches to find out if your headaches are related to dysfunction in your upper neck:

1) Posture – Your ear should be lined up with the tip of your shoulder when viewed from the side. Have someone check your standing posture. If your ear is far in front of the tip of your shoulder, your neck muscles are working harder than they should be all the time. If headaches get worse after driving or working in front of the computer, posture is probably a factor.

2) Position – When you have a headache, bend your head forward and backward slowly. Rotate your head to the right and left slowly. Bend your head side to side slowly. Increased headache pain on slow movement or at the end of the range of motion indicates that neck joint or muscle dysfunction is affecting your head.

3) Painful Points – When you have a headache, poke around your upper neck with your fingers. Are there tender areas that make your headache worse when you press on them? These painful points indicate that neck dysfunction is related to the pain in your head.

At Compass Chiropractic, we will take a comprehensive history and perform a thorough examination to determine the source of your pain. A plan will be formed specifically for you which may include spinal adjustments, ART on tight muscles in the neck and at the base of the head, and exercises and stretches to restore neck muscle function and posture. You may be custom fitted for a pillow if it is determined that improper neck support while sleeping is a source of your pain.

The links above emphasize a few important points: Spinal problems are the most likely thing to make you disabled! There is no good replacement or surgery to repair a damaged spine. Drugs as a treatment option always bring along some side effects and risks.

Doesn’t it make sense to start taking better care of your spine. If you’ve never been to a chiropractor, consider a checkup to find out what condition your spine is in and whether there might be some issues progressing that you may not be aware of. Tooth decay happens long before the pain of an exposed nerve. In the same way, spinal problems begin to take place long before they result in debilitating spinal conditions.

Introducing Calli!

Calli Professional Portrait

Name: Calli

Title: Chiropractic Assistant and Practice Representative

Background: I was raised in Southern Iowa in a small town. I have two older brothers and always enjoyed being the youngest and only girl. I attended Faith Baptist Bible College and received my Bachelor’s Degree. I married my high school sweetheart in the middle of my junior year of college, and now reside in Des Moines with my husband, Cory, and my dog, Walker.

Favorite Aspects of Working at Compass Chiropractic: There are many things I enjoy about working at Compass Chiropractic. I love learning about the job and getting to know everything that goes into chiropractic care. I especially enjoy getting to know each and every patient and learning new things about them.

What I enjoy outside of work: My favorite thing to do is spend time with my husband and family. I also enjoy going out with friends, traveling, going to the gym, motorcycle rides with my husband, music, and being involved at my church.

How I give back to the community: I donate my time and money when possible. I’ve helped through a variety of organizations including Alpha Women’s Center, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and my church.
Words to live by: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has enough worry of its own.”

Favorite local Restaurant: J. Benjamin’s

Something most patients don’t know about me: I began college as a Music Major and later switched my major, but I still love to sing and perform. I grew up in a musical family and play the piano, guitar and violin.

My experience with chiropractic: As far as chiropractic care is concerned, I have transitioned from a skeptic to a firm believer. I was experiencing back pain with tingling and numbness in my back, as well as pain and numbness down the outside of my legs. I had lived with this for a number of years, and decided it would just be a way of life for me. It affected a number of daily activities including washing dishes, doing laundry, sitting, standing, and countless others. After treatment with Dr. Krohse, which included Active Release Technique, the pain, tingling and numbness have significantly subsided in my back, and completely gone away in my legs. I will certainly never live without chiropractic care again.

Condition of the Month – Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by widespread pain in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Some other problems commonly linked with fibromyalgia include fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep problems, headaches, numbness in hands and feet, depression, and anxiety. Fibromyalgia can develop on its own, or secondary to other musculoskeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia requires a history of at least three months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in a least 11 of 18 tender-point sites. These tender-point sites include fibrous tissue or muscles of the Neck, Shoulders, Chest, Rib Cage, Lower Back, Thighs, Knees, Arms (elbows) and Buttocks. The overwhelming characteristic of fibromyalgia is long-standing, body-wide pain with defined tender points. Fibromyalgia pain can mimic the pain experienced by people with various types of arthritis. The soft-tissue pain of fibromyalgia is described as deep-aching, radiating, gnawing, shooting or burning, and ranges from mild to severe. Fibromyalgia sufferers tend to waken with body aches and stiffness.

Chiropractic care, Active Release Techniques, and specific exercises and stretches all can provide relief to patients suffering from fibromyalgia. If you feel someone you know may be dealing with this condition, send them to Dr. Krohse at Compass Chiropractic, where a very thorough initial exam will help to determine whether they are dealing with fibromyalgia or another condition and what treatments may be recommended.

A Highly Recommended Professional – Joel Akers

It’s not often you receive a recommendation for a professional from 1,900 miles away. When I told my insurance agent in Burlington, Washington that I’d be moving back to Iowa he shared that he knew the perfect person to send me to. Apparently he had met West Des Moines Insurance Agent Joel Akers recently at a seminar, and was very impressed with him.

After a single flight back to Iowa in September, 2007 to look at potential locations and meet with banks, I did most of the rest of planning of Compass Chiropractic from across the country. Everything had to come together at the same time and I remember finalizing my business insurance with Joel over the phone from an Active Release Techniques seminar in San Jose, California.
Though Joel got things done right and right away over the phone, the thing I’ve appreciated most about him is his thoroughness and desire to make sure that I understand my coverage and the need for different coverages. When I arrived in Des Moines, we scheduled a meeting for me to learn more about my policy. That meeting started a relationship that has been very beneficial for me and my business.

As I’ve added staff, Joel has been a great resource to make sure that I have all my bases covered. He set me up with a worker’s compensation plan, and when Calli started to do some practice representative work where she is driving for work, an email to Joel came back with a rapid response confirming that she is indeed covered should anything happen to her while driving for work.

I strongly recommend you talk with Joel about your personal and business insurance needs. I feel very confident that he’ll be able to customize a policy just for you. His contact information is below.

FAQ’s – Identity Theft

Q: My wife is a different person since her headaches started happening daily. What can we do?

A: We all know someone whose identity: "great parent," "loving spouse," "strong worker," or "forever-youthful athlete" has been stolen away and replaced with a new one: "headache sufferer," "low back pain victim," "carpal tunnel hostage," or "injured-shoulder drain on society." They have resigned themselves to their fate and feel no hope of having their original identity restored.

At Compass Chiropractic we fight identity theft daily. Patients are amazed when an incredibly thorough examination rapidly apprehends the causes of their condition. A plan is then formed to rapidly restore their health and identity with the most advanced non-surgical, non-drug, condition-resolving treatments available.

For dysfunctional joints (132 joints in the spine alone) which often cause back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sciatica (pain down the leg) specific hands-on or gentle, instrument-assisted adjustments are used to restore normal motion and joint function. Patented, highly-effective Active Release Techniques address scar tissue and nerve irritation which cause conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, hip pain, and knee pain. Problem-specific exercises and stretches address the muscular causes of ongoing low back pain and shoulder instability. Guaranteed semi-flexible custom orthotics address dysfunctional foot arches and resulting joint stress which cause foot, knee, hip, and low back pain.

We are thrilled to share that we frequently win the fight against identity theft. If you know someone whose identity has been stolen, please direct them to the identity theft experts at Compass Chiropractic, where a complimentary consultation is always available to learn more about our care options.

Condition of the Month – Shoulder Pain

Patients with shoulder pain report that it affects every area of their life. Activities like putting on clothes, lifting groceries, and giving a loved one a hug cannot be taken for granted anymore, as pain is felt with every movement. Athletes with shoulder pain are often faced with the options of quitting the passion of their life, or going through a higher risk surgical procedure with no guarantee of a return to full function.

At Compass Chiropractic, a thorough examination reveals the causes of shoulder pain and limited range of motion. A plan is formed to restore normal shoulder function and pain-free living. Highly effective treatments including specific adjustments and Active Release Techniques are used to address all the causes of the problem. It is so rewarding to hear stories of how our care has enabled patients to return to their normal, healthy lives.

Check the Shoulder Pain page of our website for more information.
