Important Links

I have written an article on Runner's Lounge introducing and explaining Active Release Techniques for Runners. Check it out at Runner's Lounge .

I'd also like to highlight these community links as Compass Chiropractic is actively serving patients in all of these communities and always looking for ways to serve the communities as a whole.

National Spinal Health Month

Compass Chiropractic promoted National Spinal Health Month (October) by offering a complementary first visit (exam and any needed spinal X-Rays) to all new patients. This promotion extends from October 15 through November 15. Call 515.309.1217 to schedule!

A Story of Exceeded Expectations

I came in for what I thought was a chronic hamstring pain that I could not get to go away. From November of 2007 until October 1 the level of pain was getting to be so high that I was ready to give up my only real hobby – running. Then I meet Dr. David after a running event. He uses a couple of terms describing my condition and believes he can help. It seems like a futile effort but low and behold within only a couple of sessions the problem was going away! While visiting him I also mentioned my sore knees. With therapy and alignment that too has also dissipated. Can I believe it? Hardly not, but I have to; the pain is gone within one month! Unbelievable - thanks a bunch!

(To someone considering trying chiropractic care with Dr. Krohse, I’d say) What are you going to lose? Money, time. If he can help your body do what it’s supposed to do, let me ask you why wouldn’t you see him, unless you like pain

Thanks for a Record Month!

More than 30 new patients found their way to improved health at Compass Chiropractic during the month of October! Thank you to all patients and friends of Compass Chiropractic who have referred friends and family members in to see Dr. Krohse!

Compass Chiropractic would also like to thank a business that has been a key contributor to the success during October.

Big Buddy Media’s web design and search engine optimization have been phenomenal at educating potential patients online what Compass Chiropractic has to offer. The Compass Chiropractic website consistently helps patients looking for an ethical, results-focused chiropractor in the Des Moines area find their way to Dr. Krohse.

Buddy Rigotti from Big Buddy Media created the website and it went live in January, 2008. From the day the site went live, it showed up at the top of Yahoo's search results. It took a little longer, but Compass Chiropractic is currently the top Google search result for the terms “Des Moines chiropractor”! The website brings new patients to Compass Chiropractic on a weekly basis.

Though Big Buddy Media is based out of Las Vegas, Buddy Rigotti is able to rapidly produce the highest quality websites for businesses around the nation. Big Buddy Media also has a special interest in designing highly usable websites for churches and other community outreach organizations. Contact Buddy Rigotti at Big Buddy Media if you are looking for a fantastic website that potential clients, customers, or patients will consistently find when they search for it.

Active Release Techniques Receives National Coverage

Active Release Techniques is frequently featured in articles on new highly effective therapies, especially in the sports medicine world. In the October, 2008 issue of National Geographic Adventure, Ian Dille outlined four new therapies he used to rapidly recover from a knee injury he experienced through his professional cycling career:

Active Release Techniques: Overuse injuries, like tennis elbow and my own knee pain, are common in sports that stress repetitive movements. Your overworked muscles, tendons, and ligaments suffer micro-traumas and build up scar tissue to stabilize the site of the injury – but that scar tissue also hinders the stressed area’s return to normal function.
Through the use of patented massage methods, practitioners of Active Release Techniques (ART) manually break apart the scar tissue. But it’s no spa treatment. ART therapists dig their fingers into the injured area with vigor. Data on its effectiveness is limited, but researchers at the University of California, San Diego, used ART to successfully treat over 70 percent of carpal tunnel syndrome patients. ART typically runs $120 for the initial appointment and $75 for each subsequent treatment. My knee felt more limber and moved with less pain moments after just one 20-minute session

It’s been exciting to offer this highly effective technique to the Des Moines metro area. The most common conditions resolved with Active Release Techniques in my office have been knee pain, shoulder pain and instability, carpal tunnel syndrome (hand numbness, tingling and weakness), plantar fasciitis (arch of the foot pain), tennis elbow, and chronic neck pain and headaches. Care at Compass Chiropractic is significantly more reasonable than what the author of the article paid, with treatments covered by most insurances and just $36 if paid at the time of service.

Condition of the Month – Maintenance Care

People understand the importance of maintaining their:

Teeth: I brush twice daily and get in to the dentist for my 6 month checkups

Cars: I appreciate when the trustworthy experts at Shade Tree Auto in Grimes (515.986.5241) put a sticker up reminding me to get my oil changed on time

Appearance: I schedule my haircuts with Amber Winders at Serenity Aveda Lifestyle Salon in Valley West Mall (515.223.6204) every five weeks so that things don’t get out of control

Finances: I sit down with Dan Durant from Financial Architects (515.457.1276) periodically to make sure everything is in order

Levels of Stress: I get in for a massage with Nancy Plagman from Oak Tree Therapeutic Massage (515.971.7991) once a month

Fitness: I exercise regularly and work out at Aspen Athletic Clubs – Merle Hay (515.270.5860) Hickman (515.278.2582) West Glen (515.222.1899)

However, I often hear from people who have never tried chiropractic, “I don’t want to try chiropractic because it seems like once you start going you have to keep going forever.” Do these same people avoid getting their oil changed because the mechanic may suggest they maintain their car engine rather than just wait for it to seize up? Are they offended when the dentist recommends they brush and floss and come in for periodic checkups rather than just wait for their teeth to fall out. I don’t think so!

“Even a Mack truck needs an occasional realignment”

Maintaining your spine with periodic checkups and care as needed makes a lot of sense. Statistically, spinal problems are the number one cause of disability in people over age 50. While you can get a new car and have false teeth made, there’s no replacement available if your spine stops working for you. Great looks and strong finances won’t seem so important if you have to enjoy them from a wheelchair.

Some patients I see are already geared toward wellness. They realize that a healthy spine is essential for a long, active life and are excited to get on a schedule to maintain their spine. Others choose to experience a few flare-ups with severe pain, days missed from work, and missed opportunities before they decide to maintain their spine. Then I see other patients who don’t suffer severe flare-ups but rather realize about once a year that they’ve been putting up with moderate headaches, back pain, or neck pain for 7 or 8 months and get fed up with it and come in to see me for long enough to get back to feeling normal. Then they go a few months before they get fed up with the pain and come to see me again. If you are one of these patients, consider getting on a spinal maintenance schedule. Talk with me and I’ll help find a schedule to keep you feeling great and functioning properly all the time.
