January – A Time to Look Both Ways

With the New Year, I have spent some time reflecting on what was great in 2010 as well as setting goals for things I’d like to accomplish in 2011. I’d like to share some of our successes and goals with patients and friends of Compass Chiropractic.

In 2010:

About $9,000 raised for community organizations!

With the generous support of new and established patients we raised money for community organizations including the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Special Olympics, Capital Striders, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In September we were silver medal sponsors of the Special Olympics Gold Medal Gala.

Team Compass Chiropractic Supported Local Elite Athletes

Early in the year we invited local elite athletes to experience the care in our office. After gaining confidence in our service and treatments, we invited them to join Team Compass Chiropractic where we provided them with care to optimize their performance and resolve any issues limiting their performance.

2010 Successes:

Joe Aulwes ran the Des Moines Half Marathon in a personal record 1:10:52 for a 12th place finish.

Dr. Louis DeWild qualified for Kona Ironman Triathlon World Championships in his first Ironman in Coeur d’Alene and went on to complete the world championship race in less than 10 hours.

Jed Gammell tied for first in the first running of the Chequamegon 100 Mountain Bike Race completing this new epic Midwestern race in just under 10 hours.

Cam Kirkpatrick raced his mountain bike for a number of podium finishes all while gearing up for a wedding to Zoom Performance Coach Julie Vardaman Kirkpatrick. Success on the trail and at home!

Marina McCollom was the tennis pro Women’s Open Player of the Year. She won four out of five USPTA surface tournaments in 2009 and won both the Clay Court and Indoor Championships this year. She was USPTA’s No. 1-ranked player in women’s open singles and co-No.-1 ranked player in women’s open doubles in 2009. McCollom is the director of junior tennis at 7 Flags Racquet & Fitness Club.

Kristin Rinderknecht completed Ironman Coeur d’Alene in just over 12 hours.

Loran Storts raced for podium finishes in triathlons, distance runs, and sprints while inspiring and guiding other local athletes to compete at a higher level through Ironworks Coaching.

2nd Annual Race for the Cure Team

About 20 friends and patients of Compass Chiropractic came out on an October day for the Race for the Cure. We look forward to continuing to support this great cause.

Personal Successes

On the personal side of things, the Standard Process Purification Program helped me drop and maintain at least 25 pounds of weight loss throughout the year. Weight loss combined with implementation of Chi Running and Evolution Running techniques helped me drop my 5K personal record to 19:35 and my half marathon to 1:34. I also enjoyed competing in the Hy-Vee triathlon with Team in Training for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

In 2011:

Greater Community Involvement

Our goal is to raise over $12,000 for community organizations in 2011. Again we are choosing organizations that have both touched our life personally and have an active lifestyle focus. These will include the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the MS Society, Special Olympics, and local high school booster clubs.

Team Compass Chiropractic Expansion

We are looking forward to expanding the Team Compass Chiropractic elite athlete sponsorship program to local elite athletes in other sports. Sports we anticipate adding include golf, bowling, and mixed martial arts.

Active Release Techniques Biomechanics and Ironman Certifications

This year I plan to further enhance my specialization in Active Release Techniques by completing their Biomechanics course which will enable me to better analyze gait patterns and athletic motions. I'll finish that course off with a weekend at an Ironman Triathlon where I'll work on the athletes and help them complete their race successfully.

Over the Edge

We are excited to participate in the Special Olympics Fundraiser Over the Edge. We plan to raise enough money to send two office staff and one lucky patient over the edge of one of Des Moines’ tallest buildings!

Des Moines Triathlon Club Sponsorship

We are now a bronze sponsor of the Des Moines Triathlon Club. Our donation to be a sponsor will go to an endowment to support local young triathletes in their pursuits. Our special offer for triathlon club members is a free complete initial workup (exam, any needed spinal X-rays, and mechanical table massage).

Improved Family Friendliness

Did you know that we already have a portable DVD player and Gameboy Advance in addition to toys and coloring books to keep kids busy and enjoying their visits to Compass Chiropractic. In the New Year we look forward to making kids enjoy their visits here even more.

Personal Goals

I have registered for the Grandma’s Marathon and plan on training with a goal of running a Boston Marathon qualifying time on my debut marathon. I hope to complete a local triathlon as a relay with fellow Compass Chiropractic staff making up the team.

Waiting Room Wellness - Sugar Stacks & Purification Sale

This month we’re highlighting the sugar content of healthy and unhealthy foods with the display pictured. As you can see, it takes three pounds of carrots to equal the sugar found in just one Coke! Carrots are actually a relatively high sugar-containing vegetable so a sugar-equivalent pile of broccoli would be huge!

Dr. Krohse and Connie have both experienced improvement in their nutrition and health through the Standard Process Purification Program. You can view Dr. Krohse’s experience at his blog. Over 30 patients and friends of Compass Chiropractic have now done the purification and most have lost between 12 and 18 pounds in 21 days. One of the most valuable aspects of the purification is that it can jumpstart a transition to a long term healthier eating style such as the Mediterranean and Asian diet. Check the website mediterrasian.com to see all the research pointing to these diets as the most healthy lifestyle diets.

Through January, we have the program available for $50 off ($173) to support patients and friends who are looking to jumpstart a positive health change in the New Year.

Dr. Krohse featured on Yes, You Can!

Loran Storts from Ironworks Coaching interviewed Dr. Krohse on the ways that Compass Chiropractic is making a positive impact on the community. Watch the video here.

Connie recommends 5 for $6 til 7 at Flemings Steakhouse

Flemings Steakhouse is one of my favorite restaurants in Des Moines. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, service is top notch and the food is wonderful, but I still consider it a place to go only for special occasion due to the prices. My husband Tony and I decided to go there one weekend night and just sit in the bar for an appetizer and drink. We were not aware that they have a special menu for just the bar called 5 for $6 ‘til 7. It is 5 cocktails, 5 wines by the glass and 5 appetizers. $6 each, served at the bar until 7 PM. They also offer a Fleming’s prime burger with cheese and bacon for $6 and Blue Moon Belgian White Ale 2 for $6.

The bacon cheese burger is delicious and it also comes with 2 very large onion rings. We left there very satisfied, the food was excellent once again and the service is just as good in the bar area as it in the dining room. Check out Flemings Steakhouse when you want a fun night out.

Abbey Recommends Boulder, Colorado

Ever since I was five years old my family has made a yearly trip to Boulder, Colorado to see family friends. For the New Years holiday I was fortunate to make my way to the beautiful city once again, but this time with a group of my friends. While the drive from Des Moines is rather flat and boring going through western Kansas, the first sight of the mountains are totally worth the long drive. The snow topped mountains are a sight to see and are so unique to the Colorado atmosphere.

On my New Years trip this year I went to one of my favorite places in Boulder, Pearl Street Mall. Simply put, there is nothing like it. Pearl Street is an outdoors mall that is lined with many unique shops and restaurants. While some of the stores are chains throughout the U.S., most of the stores are local. One of my favorite shops is "Into the Wind," which is a toy store filled with all kinds of silly and unique toys, but they are most known for the kites that are hanging from the ceiling. The stores atmosphere makes you feel like a kid again, wandering through the store playing with every toy in sight. As with the stores, there are chain restaurants, but most of them are local and absolutely fantastic. During my trip I tried a new place on Pearl Street called "Hapa" which is a sushi bar and I can confidently say that it was some of the best sushi I have ever had.

While I enjoy the overall atmosphere of Boulder, by far my favorite thing to do is to drive through the mountains. From where we were staying this past trip we had a spectacular view of the three Flatirons that run along the Green Mountains. On our last day in Boulder we drove up the mountain to take a closer look at the Flatirons and the view from the top was just breathtaking as we could see all of Boulder. Along with site seeing on the mountains, I did attempt to do some skiing, and found that I am absolutely horrible. I am definitely going to take lessons the next time that I am there.

After many years of traveling to Boulder, I know that this is one of my favorite places to visit but I even hope to live in or in a suburb of Boulder some day. I love the location, the people, and all of the outdoor activities you can do. Just having the option to hike, camp, and to rock climb would be fantastic. All of these activities are outside enjoying the beautiful weather that Boulder almost always has to offer. If you love the outdoors, great weather, and great scenery I definitely recommend taking a trip out to Boulder, Colorado.

Dr. Krohse Recommends Runkeeper Pro for iPhone or Android (Free through the end of January – normally $10!)

Runkeeper Pro is the GPS app I use to keep track of all my runs. I love it because it acts as a simple and quick training log and provides motivation by letting you share your runs through Facebook or Twitter. The Pro version has awesome audio updates where a lady’s voice interrupts your music at designated intervals and tells you the current stats of your run such as distance, time, and average pace. Runkeeper Pro also has a cheap subscription option that enables your friends, family, and stalkers to watch where you run on a google map in real time from the comfort of their computer!

& a New Podcast – Get-Fit Guy

Ben Greenfield’s addition to the Quick and Dirty Tips Network instantly shot to the top of the health and fitness iTunes podcast rankings. It has great information and will help you shape up in the New Year. Look it up in iTunes or listen at the website.

Condition of the Month – Whiplash

Whiplash, injury resulting from a sudden jerking of the head and neck, is a condition commonly treated at Compass Chiropractic. Often people experience symptoms resulting from an untreated or inadequately treated whiplash incident years after the injury took place. A combination of specific adjustments and Active Release Techniques is frequently able to greatly improve or resolve chronic symptoms of neck tightness, pain, headaches, and shoulder/arm symptoms resulting from a past whiplash injury. Additionally, specific exercises can be recommended to improve the stability of the neck.

Car accidents commonly cause whiplash. It's important that you know what to do in case of an accident, and we have available pamphlets for your glovebox or purse with specific instructions. Pick one up on your next visit or print one off our website - What to do in Case of A Car Accident Pamphlet. If you have been in an accident within the last two years and are still experiencing related symptoms, your care may be covered by the responsible car insurance. Call Compass Chiropractic (515) 309-1217 and we will work with you to find out what your coverage is.

If you have been in a recent car accident, we recommend you schedule a thorough examination with Dr. Krohse as soon as possible so that he can form a plan to return your body to normal function as well as fully document the extent of injury resulting from the accident.
