A New Face at Compass Chiropractic
We’re excited to welcome Holly to the Compass Chiropractic team. She’ll be joining us as a Practice Representative, sharing with the community our focus on excellent care and fantastic results. Here are some reasons you might want to give Holly a call at 515-309-1217:
· Introduction Cakes and Bagels – Would your coworkers like to receive a gift from Compass Chiropractic along with a piece of delicious Costco cake or a Panera bagel? Call Holly to schedule a time when she can introduce Compass Chiropractic to your coworkers in a very tasteful way!
· Lunch & Learns – Score lunch for your coworkers with one of our Lunch & Learns. Holly can find a time to bring lunch for your office, and Dr. Krohse will give a 20 minute presentation on “How to Stay Young the First 100 Years At Work.” Valuable exercises on preventing neck pain, upper back pain, and headaches will be taught.
· Active Release Techniques (ART) Specialized Massage Demonstrations and Spinal Screenings – Your coworkers will love you when you get them free 15 minute Active Release Techniques treatments with Dr. Krohse. Call Holly to set up a time period where members of your office can reserve a quick spinal health check by Holly and then get an Active Release Demonstration on their painful or tight areas by Dr. Krohse.
Condition of the Month – Chiropractic Skepticism
We frequently see new patients come in who share “I don’t believe in chiropractic” only to find themselves feeling so much better a short time later with some quality chiropractic care. Hindsight is 20/20.
· Consumer Reports found that back pain sufferers rated chiropractors and chiropractic adjustments as the most effective (see the report on the back of this sheet)
· Medicare and Medicaid cover chiropractic care - your government has found chiropractic to be effective and cost effective
· All major insurances cover chiropractic care
· You have 132 joints in your spine! If one of them is not moving right, chiropractic adjustments help restore them to normal motion
Chiropractic care works by restoring dysfunctional joints in the spine to normal motion, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. Dr. Krohse’s other specialty, Active Release Techniques specialized massage, loosens and relaxes problem muscles that can cause a variety of problems. All patients are guided in implementing a home exercise program to stabilize their spine. To see if our care may be able to help you, call (515) 309-1217 today for a complimentary consultation.
Fall - A great time to tell your friends and family to try care at Compass Chiropractic
If you have friends and family putting up with pain, they may find fall a great time to try our quality care. First, it always makes sense to feel good. Second, it makes sense to get your health in order before the holidays. Third, your friends and family are more likely now to have met their deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums for the year, meaning that fall can be a more cost-effective time of the year to come in for care rather than putting it off till next year when the deductibles reset.
Research for Yoga
This strong study on the effects of Yoga for people with chronic back pain may help motivate some readers of this newsletter to get their butts on a mat.
Yoga Classes Help Relieve Chronic Back Pain
I was able to meet with some local yoga studio owners and tour their studios this month.
· Lily Hou from Green Yoga House with locations in Clive and West Des Moines shared that she sees referrals from local acupuncturists and other providers. She leads classes with a number of clients seeking wellness or dealing with ongoing pain. She specifically mentioned working with people dealing with knee injuries. The beautiful studio I toured is located south of Hickman and west of 128th Street in Clive at 2204 Woodlands Parkway.
· Kris Larrison owns Breathe Studio in Clive. This studio specializes in hot yoga. Kris shared that the air temperature of 95 to 100 degrees encourages much greater flexibility along with the potential to burn more calories and purify your body. Central Iowa clients, who have experienced hot yoga in larger cities around the country, travel long distances to enjoy the classes at Kris’ studio located on the north side of University across from the Jordan Creek Hy-Vee.
· As a member of Aspen Athletic Club, I personally took advantage of the included yoga classes with Jennifer at the Merle Hay location. I thought she did an excellent job of keeping the class suitable for all ability levels and definitely felt better after the class. I’m planning on attending classes regularly at the Merle Hay and Hickman location through the late fall and winter months.

Recommended Book – Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
Dave Ramsey’s views on solving money problems resonate with my views on solving health problems. I’ve helped too many patients with chronic problems. When someone comes in with a short term problem, I recommend an intense and aggressive (in a conservative way I mean; save higher risk drugs and surgery as a later option whenever possible) plan to fix their problem as soon as possible. I don’t want my relaxed recommendations to be the cause of someone dealing with a chronic problem for the rest of their life! I attempt to give people the plan that I’m most confident will fix their problem ASAP.
In the Total Money Makeover, Dave calls America on its chronic personal finance and debt problem, and is quite persuasive in convincing readers that it’s time to get “gazelle intense” to get out of the mess they’re in. The actual steps of his plan are simple and understandable by anyone. As he likes to say, he gives “The advice your grandmother would give you, except we keep our teeth in!”
Steps in his plan include
1. $1000 emergency fund
2. Pay off all debt using the Debt Snowball
3. 3-6 months of expenses in an emergency fund
4. Invest 15% of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement
5. College funding for children
6. Pay off home early
7. Build wealth and give
This book stands out as a life-changer for me, and I am so thankful that my best friend’s mom cared about me enough to give it to me midway through undergraduate school at UNI. I feel like every high school graduate, college graduate, newly married couple, and anyone with any debt would benefit from reading The Total Money Makeover.
I also listen to Dave Ramsey’s podcasts a couple days each week through ITunes and always feel inspired and better educated as a result. Each day you’ll hear a few people call in who decided they were sick and tired of being broke and just finished paying off debts ranging from $10,000 to $200,000 within a couple years of starting Dave's plan. Also, you learn all kinds of other great financial advice as people call in with their difficult personal finance questions. He’s on the radio locally on KWKY 1150 AM at 3 PM weekdays and his Financial Peace University programs are available at local churches.
A Highly Recommended Professional – Ray Cron - Willis Auto Campus – 515-253-9600
Recently I joined the Westside BNI (Business Network International) chapter. This group of business owners and professionals meet Tuesdays at the Machine Shed at 7 AM and our goal is to work as a team to help each others’ businesses grow. Local BNI members can be a great resource, as we have all made a commitment to treat one another’s referrals of friends and family with the highest of ethics and integrity. Give me a call if you're a business owner or professional and are interested in being my guest at an upcoming meeting.
Ray Cron is a Sales and Leasing Consultant at Willis Auto Campus at Hickman and 100th Street. He has an easy job as the cars Willis carries pretty much sell themselves. Consumer ratings firm J.D. Power and Associates has named Lexus the most reliable brand in the U.S. fourteen times, and they also carry Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, and Hummer. They also have a large selection of certified and high quality pre-owned vehicles. I would definitely recommend contacting Ray next time you are looking for a quality new or used vehicle.
