Introducing Connie Byington

Chiropractic Assistant & Practice Representative

Background: We just recently moved to Des Moines from Sioux Falls, S.D. and have been having a lot of fun exploring this great city. I have a wonderful husband, Tony, 2 children, 2 step children and an adorable grandson, Beckett.

Favorite aspects of working at Compass Chiropractic: I love seeing the patients feeling better and getting the help they need. I have also enjoyed learning more about Chiropractic care and especially ART (Active Release Techniques).

What I enjoy outside of work: I love to be outside and do a lot of running. I have ran a couple of marathons and many other road races. We have also been biking since Des Moines has so many fun trails to explore. In the cold winter months I love to relax with a good book or enjoy a fun movie.

How I give back to the community: I have been active with the MS Society and also Special Olympics for several years and am anxious to get active locally in Des Moines.

Words to live by: “Treat people how I want to be treated” has always been my philosophy and has never failed me. When I am running long runs I tell myself “The pain is temporary but the pride is forever” and it helps keep me going.

Favorite local restaurant: There are so many fun and great places to eat and it is hard to pick just one. I have enjoyed trying the local favorites, especially the Italian cuisine.

Something most patients don’t know about me: Chocolate makes me very happy and I love to bake. I look forward to the holidays so I have an excuse to bake lots of goodies.

My experience with chiropractic: I had never been to one before I worked at Compass Chiropractic but have seen chiropractic care help my family members back in South Dakota so I am very excited to have my own treatments with Dr Krohse so he can help me with some running problems I have been dealing with.

Congratulations to Calli

A big thank you and congratulations goes out to Calli, who was recruited to work for a local credit union. We have appreciated her contributions and wish her great success and a wonderful future!

Couch to 5K Feature

Dr. Krohse was recently featured as an expert in a Des Moines Register article on Couch to 5K programs. Through our Pain-Free & Efficient Running Workshops (details below) we aim to prevent many of the injuries that take place in new runners. However, we also feel confident that if runners do become injured, we are able to address their problems with Active Release Techniques, the premier soft-tissue work for overuse injuries.

Pain-Free & Efficient Running Workshop – Wednesday, May 5 and 19 at 6:30 PM

At 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 5 and 19 Compass Chiropractic will host a Pain-Free & Efficient Running Workshop. The concepts and techniques of low impact running styles Chi Running and Evolution Running will be introduced. A workshop will follow where participants will practice drills to integrate these concepts into their running. The session will end with video and slow motion review of participants running form. Participants should arrive in clothes and shoes suitable to run in. Suggested RSVP to 515-309-1217 or compasschiro@gmail.com. Free (donations to Dr. David Krohse's Team in Training Fund for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society welcome)

His Favorite Local Active and Athletic Clubs

Iowa Outdoor Unlimited (IOU) – This club is composed of outdoor and active lifestyle enthusiasts and welcomes all to enjoy outdoor adventures here in Central Iowa and across the country. A sample summer Saturday with Iowa Outdoor Unlimited might include Yoga in the Park, breakfast at the Downtown Farmer’s Market, afternoon mountain biking at the Center Trails, and a group camp out at Jester Park in the evening. IOU leadership put together amazing longer trips that are unbelievably reasonable in cost. Groups go canoeing in the Boundary Waters each summer with total costs for a week under $200. Upcoming trips include a skiing & whitewater rafting trip in Colorado this month, a back country hiking trip at Glacier National Park at the end of summer, and a camping, hiking, and rock climbing trip to Pike’s Peak State Park in Iowa over Memorial Day weekend. Subscribe to the Yahoo newsgroup to stay informed on all the adventures available through IOU and attend meetings the third Monday of each month to get to know other outdoors lovers.

Capital Striders – Local runners should be thankful to have such a great club supporting the sport here in Central Iowa. Capital Striders sponsors weekly training runs on Saturday mornings starting from Drake in the winter and at Gray's Lake in the summer. My personal favorite Capital Striders weekly run is the Beginning Runners Group which meets just down the hill from my office at Campbell Park in Clive on Mondays at 6 PM. This run starts with 15 minutes of education on proper running and training. I’ll be giving the 15 minute talk on May 10 with a crash course on Evolution and Chi Running styles. Participants can choose from three different groups (2 miles, 3-4 miles, or 5-6 miles). Capital Striders also present some great local runs including the Loop the Lake, Clive Running Festival, and Capital Pursuit. Subscribe to the weekly Capital Striders updates through this link!

Des Moines Triathlon Club – Local multisport athletes come together through the Des Moines Triathlon Club. Social meetings, group training sessions with USA Triathlon certified coaches, and many other great opportunities are coordinated through the Yahoo newsgroup. Join today and get to know some top-notch individuals who will give you the knowledge & motivation to perform at higher levels!

Des Moines Cycle Club – Join the Des Moines Cycle Club to get plugged in with local two-wheel enthusiasts. They sponsor rides such as the weekly Ride'n Green to the Farmers Market which takes off from the Clive Aquatic Center at 9:00 on Saturdays. This will be the second year for DMCC's Tour the Raccoon June 12-13 which takes riders on an overnight trip from Des Moines to Jefferson with an overnight at the Bell Tower Festival. Condition of the Month - Tension Headaches

A condition involving pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck, usually associated with muscle tightness in these areas. Tension headaches are one of the most common forms of headache. They can occur at any age, but are most common in adults and adolescents. If a headache occurs two or more times weekly for several months or longer, the condition is considered chronic. Tension headaches result from the contraction of neck and scalp muscles. One cause of this muscle contraction is a response to stress, depression or anxiety. Any activity that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time without moving can cause a headache. Such activities include typing or use of computers, fine work with the hands, and use of a microscope. Sleeping in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal position can also trigger this type of headache. Other causes include spinal misalignment, eye strain, fatigue, alcohol use, excessive smoking, excessive caffeine use, sinus infection, nasal congestion, overexertion, colds, and influenza. Tension headaches are not associated with structural lesions in the brain.

Through a combination of chiropractic care, Active Release Techniques problem-focused muscle work, and postural exercises we are able to resolve or greatly improve most tension and migraine headache conditions. To see if our care may be able to help you call 515.309.1217 to schedule a new patient visit or complimentary consultation.

Winning Testimonial

Congratulations to Eric from Des Moines who won an iPod Nano by sharing his experience at Compass Chiropractic:

“Several months (9) ago, I have noticed a lack of feeling in my right leg just above my knee. After going to exercise for several months (3) of seeing if exercise would fix the problem, I met Dr. Krohse at Aspen Athletic Club and we discuss the lack of sensation. After a few sessions, the feeling in my leg started coming back. Currently I can feel pretty well. The pain sensations have departed and I have more movement than before starting chiropractic services with Compass Chiropractic. My wife has joined chiropractic care and her pain complaints have decreased dramatically over the past few months.”

Team in Training Fundraiser

On Sunday, June 13 Dr. Krohse will compete in the Hy-Vee Triathlon as a part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. A goal has been set to raise at least $3,000 to go toward the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Any new patient who donates $50 or more to the Team In Training fund will receive a complementary first visit (exam, any needed spinal X-rays, and table massage up to $300 value).
